State Department Expresses Concern Over Restriction of LGBT Rights in Russia

The State Department was asked its response regarding legislation which passed on a second reading in St. Petersburg, Russia yesterday. The restrictive law would ban and impose fines on all Gay Pride events, LGBT organizations, and anything considered to be "promotion" of homosexuality.

Na5Said the statement from the State Dept:

We are concerned by proposed local legislation in Russia that would severely restrict freedoms of expression and assembly for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals, and indeed all Russians.  As Secretary Clinton has said, gay rights are human rights and human rights are gay rights. We have called on Russian officials to safeguard these freedoms, and to foster an environment which promotes respect for the rights of all citizens. We have also consulted with our EU partners on this issue.  They share our concerns and are also engaging Russian officials on this. The United States places great importance on combating discrimination against the LGBT community and all minority groups.

This and disapproval from the EU are important. We have LGBT brothers and sisters in Russia and they must be allowed all the rights of other citizens. Who else will stand up for them if not the Western nations? The State Deprtment can be proud of its efforts

They are selling weapons to the Saudis and Bahrain, while expressing “concern” that they will be used to crack down on protesters. It would be better if it came from a less hypocritical source. Relations are already extremely tense – and not just between governments.
