Dorothy Bond, Tennessee Principal Who Told Gay Students They'll 'Go To Hell', Resigns

D_bond

Yesterday I posted about Dorothy Bond, the Haywood High School principal who told gay students they'll "go to hell", threatened them with expulsion for any displays of same-sex affection, and demanded students pray.

The story caused outrage. Bond has now resigned:

A statement released by the Haywood County School Board’s law firm, Purcell, Sellers & Craig Inc., said Principal Dorothy Bond tendered her resignation Thursday.

“The Haywood County Board of Education acknowledges its student body’s right to free speech,” the board said in the statement. “Further, the Haywood County Board of Education strives to provide an atmosphere of tolerance and diversity while maintaining high academic standards.”

  4. I hope she never works in education again.

  5. Just pointing out that her resignation came two or three hours after the school received a demand letter the ACLU sent on behalf of several students and families.

  6. She'll end up becoming a preacher and starting her own church, making more money than she ever did as a principal.

  8. Hey Dorothy, there's a music teacher here in St. Louis who was fired from the Catholic school he worked in because he married his long time partner in New York. Maybe you can take his job...bigots should stick together.

  9. Sure, she probably will land on her feet. So what? The important thing is that this is a victory. Ten years ago the school district wuld have tried to ride things out. Twenty years ago, they would have been praising her as a voice of reason and values. Now, she is shown the door and a statement is issued emphasising "an atmosphere of tolerance and diversity." The tide is changing

  10. And when people speak up, change happens. Glad this tide is turning.

  11. A verbally abusive bully like this never had any business being around children in the first place. I'm glad she's gone -- maybe somehow she can begin to learn to be a better person from this lesson.

  12. She could seek employment in Iran, where religion rules the State.

  13. Go ahead, let her become the new spokes person for bigotry and hate... Let her go on and on about how her narrow minded ways got her canned. Her and her ilk can rot in the ground for good ASAP as far as I'm concerned.

  14. Surely it's progress when even in rural Tennessee such behavior is now intolerable. Maybe things are improving...

    And don't call me Shirley.

  15. And that, my friends, is how it's done.

Say, where's Rick? This wasn't supposed to be possible with a black lady, because we Lefties had painted ourselves into a corner, what with decades of us pushing for human rights progress and all.

  16. @Chris - I have no doubt this was a "resign or be fired" moment for Ms. Bond. As Rob notes, in some ways that makes it a bigger victory. The school board clearly saw a PR, if not legal, nightmare in the making and short-circuited it in the time it took to set up a meeting with the (former) principal. Even if they agree with her, they cannot publicly state that, and there have been enough lawsuits against schools that didn't step in to stop individual acts of bullying to put the fear of the courts, if not God, in them - can you imagine how much $$ the board could have to fork over because Bond was stupid enough to make her statements in front of the entire student body?

  17. The letter from @ACLUTN to the school district is great:

    http://www.aclu-tn.org/pdfs/Haywood.pdf

We should thank them, @reddit, and most of all, the students that came forward. Some of the students mentioned this on @reddit the night it happened, and people there were begging the students to contact the ACLU.

  18. I'm guessing those 'books' behind her in that picture are about as real as her 'degree' and 'professional certification'.

  25. GOOD.

She abused the privileges of her position authority to force her personal beliefs upon others people who do not share her faith.

I doubt she will learn from this incident and will continue attempting to force her faith down other people's throats, but at least now she won't have the leverage of being in a position of power.
