NEWS: China Cracks Down, Republicans Crack Up, Literature Gets Fun

Towleroad-roadicon China cracks down on media as CP drama mounts:

Chinese police have arrested six people and shut 16 websites after rumours were spread that military vehicles were on the streets of Beijing, officials say.

The web posts were picked up last week by media outlets around the world, amid uncertainty caused by the ouster of top political leader Bo Xilai ...

Two popular microblogs have temporarily stopped users from posting comments ...

China's top leaders are grappling with the biggest political crisis they have faced for years, the BBC's Michael Bristow reports from Beijing.

The country will begin a once-in-a-decade leadership change later this year. But one of the main contenders for promotion - Bo Xilai - has just been sacked, suggesting a fierce fight behind the scenes for control of the ruling Communist Party.

Towleroad-roadicon Good to remember: Many people of faith support marriage equality in NC.

Towleroad-roadicon The modern family: Two women mother a brood of quadruplets who were born two weeks apart.

Towleroad-roadicon He was an illegal immigrant. He was kicked out of the United States after running a red light. Now, that criminal record prevents him from re-entering the country to go to his son's funeral:

“Fidel” Merlos-Lopez is trying to attend the funeral services for his 10-year-old son Damien Lopez on Monday after the boy, along with his cousin, aunt and 7-month-old half-brother, died in a fire last week in the town of Shenandoah.

But U.S. Customs and Border Protection have denied Fidel Lopez entrance into the country after he was asked by immigration authorities to leave the country voluntarily in 2007 after running a red light.

Towleroad-roadicon Republicans, under the impression that kids in school "can't talk about God," rally against make-believe war on religious freedom:

Tumblr_llak0ehEAF1qbl75h“This type of faith and values politicking has very, very little broad support amongst Americans,” said Jacques Berlinerblau, a Georgetown University professor and author of the upcoming book “How to be Secular: a Call to Arms for Religious Freedom.”

“The problem is a core constituency of the Republican party will only engage as Republicans if that product is sold and this is where they’re stuck.”

Towleroad-roadicon Another case of teachers abusing disabled kids.

Towleroad-roadicon The screams recorded on that telephone call were probably not George Zimmerman's.

  2. As someone who sees children with CP on a daily basis every work day, those teachers abusing that kid just made me furious. And the mother#$%$##* teacher's union that has them re-instated after every suspension. Yeah, I REALLY wonder what will happen when the school board meets. My earlier post I guess got sent to purgatory for naughty language. But those cerebral palsy patients are perfectly functioning minds trapped in a wheelchair with a spastic body. And for that poor bullied kid to go home depressed and tell his parents he had "a good day". Those two teachers should be run out of town on a rail. I am so glad it sounds like the parents of every kid in that school are rallying.

  3. MARKUS - it indeed boggles the mind. I often wonder about the training for some of these people.

I am reminded of when I worked at a DV shelter. One of the children told me of being pointedly segregated and publicly humiliated by a teacher because the child had been crying a lot. As if witnessing her mother being abused and having to flee the family home hadn't been traumatic enough.

  4. Thank you for all of these posts, which remind us that the struggle for LGBT rights is part of a larger struggle for human rights around the world.

  5. Gee, I dunno, could it be possible that the man was asked to voluntarily leave the country because he entered the U.S. illegally and not because he ran a red light?

And could it also be possible that once you illegally enter the country and break our laws that you might not be allowed back in?

My grandparents entered this country legally and gained citizenship legally. It really pisses me off to see how much we coddle illegal aliens (who enter this country illegally and break our laws and feed off of our systems) just because it's currently the "politically correct" thing to do.
