Police Raid Bar in Gambia, Arrest 15 'Suspected of Homosexuality'

Police have arrested 15 men 'suspected of homosexuality' in Gambia, AFP reports:

JammehThe men, all Gambians except one Senegalese, were arrested late Monday when police raided a bar in a popular tourist area. Officers had received a tip of people "publicly displaying or promoting homosexual activities," a senior police officer speaking on condition of anonymity told AFP.

"They will be charged accordingly after we have completed our investigations," the police official said.

Homosexuality in Gambia is punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

In 2008, Gambian President Yahya Jammeh told all homosexuals to leave the country or risk being beheaded.

  1. "...publicly displaying or promoting homosexual activities"...

What, like shopping or decorating? Maybe dressing way too nice for that country?

Pretty vague, but then, the whole concept of arresting someone for being gay is downright asinine.

  6. For future reference it should be called: the backward. This is just one more example of behavior on the most backward continent on the planet, especially when it comes to human rights. It ain't P C , but its true. I am sure the ideologues on the left will tell us it is the fault of the European Colonialists. Right!

  7. "They will be charged accordingly after we have completed our investigations," the police official said. And immediately it was translated into drumbeats so all the villages of the country could take notice of the news.

  8. What, is Atlantis doing tours of Gambia now?

Seriously, "a bar in a popular tourist area"? Were all these guys Gambian, or were there some foreigners involved/arrested as well?
