Gaga Forced To Cancel Indonesian Concert

There shall be no Born This Way Ball in Indonesia.

After clerics in Jakarta spent several weeks fuming and fretting over the social implications of allowing Lady Gaga, lover of sodomites and revealer of body parts, to perform in the world's largest Muslim country, Gaga's security team was so inundated with threats and portents that they forcibly canceled the concert.

From CNN:

The pop diva appeared to acknowledge [the situation] in a post on Twitter on Saturday: "There is nothing Holy about hatred."

Islamists and conservative Muslims have decried Lady Gaga's upcoming concert, saying her revealing costumes and sensual dance moves are forbidden by Islamic law.

The chairman of the Islamic Defenders Front, Habib Rizieq, said his group could not guarantee security if the concert were held.

Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world.

In March, the pop star got a thumbs-down by the country's highest Islamic authority, according to The Jakarta Globe.

Indonesian Council of Ulema chairman Cholil Ridwan was urging Muslims not to attend the controversial singer's upcoming concert in Jakarta, the newspaper reported.

"(The concert is) intended to destroy the nation's morality," Ridwan told the Globe.

I think Ridwan is correct: Lady Gaga probably did direct the Born This Way Ball toward Indonesia, in part, because she dislikes what passes for sexual morality there. What's mystifying is why Indonesian clerics, despite their vast power, would feel threatened by a 26-year-old pop singer from the Lower East Side. They've allegedly got God on their side, and righteousness, and culture and history and whatnot. With so much going for them, why should they become unmanned by a few pop tunes and a bit of latex?

  1. But... but... the media have been telling me for over a decade now that Indonesia is a "moderate Muslim" country.

  2. The threats came from Muslim terrorist who want to kill any thing looks like freedom. The same thing is going on in the west where the Christian terrorist are also making threats to kill LGBT people. My advice is to buy and practice how to use a gun to protect your self before they come for you like the Catholic Nazi Germans did when the mad man Hitler came to power.

  3. Why are they afraid of Lady Gaga or anyone else who doesnt agree with their way of life? Because they don't want any dissenting opinions or anything that challenges their power or "supremecy" over the powerless masses. It comes down to power, money and maybe not wanting to admit that deep down, they know they are wrong. After all, if any religion can be proven to be true, or if all religious leaders are giving, caring people who help others selflessly, what do they have to fear?

  4. This is what organized religion does to the world. Reason makes airplanes fly. Religion makes airplanes fly into buildings.

  5. Dave, you're a completwe tool and a jackass. nowhere in America does Lady GaGa have to cancel concerts because of Christians. N-O-W-H-E-R-E.

  6. Scooby, where you on vacation last week when it was a good "Christian" suggested we be starved to death in a concentration camp and how his followers supported the idea? Where did Dave suggest Lady Gaga had to cancel her concert due to them. LEARN TO READ AND COMPREHEND. These right wing Christians are most indeed America's Taliban.

  7. Scooby, I believe Dave is referring to the current social climate in AMERICA where Christians are publicly calling for homosexuals to be rounded up in electrified fences and left to die. If your biggest concern is a GAGA concert, I believe you are missing the point.

  8. The emphasis is on the word "allegedly." They "allegedly" have god on their side, but all they have on their side is fear and threats. Their god is apparently not at all interested in their agenda.

  9. It's one thing to object to something - it's another thing to imply that violence will be used against a performer (ie we cant "promise your safety"). Religious violence has got to stop.

  10. Christians talk out their ass day in and day out. they are not beheading people. they are not threatening to cause chaos at someone's concert because they praise gays and wear a bra and panties on stage. i'm not saying give the Christians some slack, just focus on the VIOLENT religion, mmmmmk?

    Posted by: scooby | May 27, 2012 5:14:24 PM

  11. "Religion makes airplanes fly into buildings."

No, Brad. *Islamic terrorists* make airplanes fly into buildings. I will not let you revise history.

Christians were not involved in this story, so the politically correct, knee-jerk reaction to lump all religions together or blame Christianity is off topic and bigoted.

  12. It is a moderate Muslim country, Max but in a country of over 200 million, not everyone will be moderate. It's one of the few muslim countries in the world where being gay isn't a crime. But it's also a democracy so protests are allowed. The government didn't ban her, she cancelled the show due to some idiot extremists. a Christian parallel would be the cancelling of gay pride parades in russia and eastern europe due to threats from violent orthodox thugs. There are good and bad people everywhere, so put away the broad brush.

  13. Scoop, when you say "the VIOLENT religion," I take it you're not talking about the one that sponsored more than a dozen campaigns of ethnic and religious genocide. You know, the one whose millennium of rule was so violent and cruel that several hundred years later it's still called the Dark Ages and universally regarded as the worst period in human history? The one whose symbol is a device that was used to torture people to death?

It's not that Christians talk out of their asses. We have over a thousand years of history to tell us _exactly_ what Christians would do if they had their way. No, it's that they're still constrained by the secular governments and institutions that rose up against Christian cruelty. The only difference with Islam is that secular institutions haven't completely overtaken religious indoctrination in the Islamic world. Islamic violence only shows that no matter the religion, it's a small step from believing there's an invisible man in the sky to believing the invisible man in the sky encourages your violent impulses.

  14. It has nothing to do with being "holy," Lady Gaga is some hack entertainer. This is good news!

  15. @Max
Sorry but I won't let you get away with making specious accusations. I didn't say a word about Christians, you did. I didn't say eery follower of a religion is a terrorist, you did. I simply stated that people who get too caught up in their religious mania make stupid decisions. Just like the clerics in Indonesia did about Lady Gaga. If you don't think Christians can be terrorists in the name of Jesus then you are ignoring the murderers of abortion providers and attacks on abortions clinics. The Christian Pastor Worley in NC says gays deserve death and his congregation defends him. Reasonable, logical people do not do these things. People in the throes of what they think their imaginary god wants them to do, carry out some pretty stupid acts. Being an atheist is not being a bigot.

  16. Regarding the Islamophobic/racist comments about the cancellation of Gaga's concert:

Religion is the enemy and our superstitious enemies have more in common than not in terms of their bloodthirsty attacks on humanism, cultural modernism and above all their attacks on GLBT folks. They are equally our enemy. There can be no disputing that.

We have to fight for our rights and often for our lives against all comers and in North America and Europe that means christers, evangelicals, catholics and mormons. They're the main enemy and their record as racist, anti-workerm misogynist and homophobic mass murderers is vicious and unparalleled in its sadism. That's true both historically and in modern times.

Beyond that truism, though, there is one thing that divides abrahamist bigots and that's the zionist ethnic cleansing campaigns against Palestinians and US/Canadian/NATO attacks on Arab and muslim independent governments and independence movements from Morocco to Indonesia.

On that question decent folks will have to support the political goals of the Arab and muslim states and movements in their defensive war against US/Canadian/NATO colonialist depredations.

The world will be a much safer place for everyone, and particularly for GLBT folks from Morocco to Indonesia when NATO is dissolved and disarmed and when the US passes a Constitutional Amendment declaring that promoting foreign wars of aggression to aid the .01% is treason. The Middle East/ South Asia will be a much safer place when the zionist bunkerstadt is brought to its knees.

People who say that one cult is worse than the other are not only delusional, they're one very tiny step away from being a racist, an Islamophobe.

  17. Um, guys, bear in the mind that what the cleric has said is not representative of the total whole. They were being blackmailed by one vocal group which is practically a Westboro-Baptist Church equivalent (only more violent). From an Indonesian. Thank you.

  18. Girls, put away the "claws." You have two enemy that you need to watch out for. The muslims and the Christians. Both want to hurt you.

  19. *sarcasm on*

This means so much because we all know Lady GaGa epitomizes what it means to be homosexual.

    *sarcasm off*

  20. uh-oh, as usual a post about Lady Gaga brings out the cowardly closeted boys who never got over the fact that their white christian communities were ashamed to be related to them.

  21. Gosh that Lady Gaga picture reminds me so much of a Madonna show I saw. I can't remember which one? Anyhow, perhaps Lady Gaga will be okay if she continues her fake gay activism despite not having an ounce of musical talent.

  23. i've said it before and i'll say it again - hating lady gaga won't make her life worse, her fan's lives worse, nor will it in any way make your life better.

    yeah. he "fake gay activism"

look, if you have to pretend that gaga doesn't support and champion the LGBT Communities simply because you're upset that people in your own life WON'T you can keep it up. your delusion is your prison.
