Ron Paul Supporters Backing Gay Candidate In Texas

RonPaulVanNow that they have washed the glitter out of their eyes and accepted that Ron Paul will not be the Republican presidential nominee, the libertarian hero's supporters are now turning their attention to smaller, state-based races.

And one man, John Ramsey, seems to be leading the pack: the 21-year old used a family inheritance to start his own super PAC, Liberty for All, and is currently funding races all over the country, including one in Texas, where the candidate is not necessarily what you would expect.

From the New York Times:

With their favorite having lost the nomination for president, Mr. Paul’s dedicated band of youthful supporters is looking down-ballot and swarming lightly guarded Republican redoubts like state party conventions in an attempt to infiltrate the top echelons of the party.

Liberty for All appears to have a taste for the obscure. Its next candidate is Michael D. Cargill, a gay, black gun store owner running for constable in Travis County, Tex.

But the political action committee will have money to spend. Mr. Ramsey said that between his wallet and a fund-raising push, the PAC expected to have $10 million this summer.

Ramsey told the paper that he will spend as much money as it takes "to get this country moving in a freer direction."

  1. The glitter will never be removed because the pursuit for liberty will always shine through.

  2. I've never heard of a gay, black gun. They must be popular though if there's a whole store dedicated to them.

    ...eats, shoots and leaves.

  3. Asher, if you are truly libertarian you should be looking for a true libertarian to idolize. Ron Paul isn't even close to a true libertarian. He's just another cafeteria libertarian and they're a dime a dozen!

  4. Lawsy mercy! "Gay, black, gun store owner." Really? Hard to make this stuff up.

  5. Andrew, No one has glitter in their eyes. But,you must be completely blind if you have not noticed the momentum and popularity Dr. Paul has over Romney. The real delegate count is Romney - 541 & Paul - 186, with a couple of thousand delegates outstanding. This is far from over. I think it is great that Michael Cargill has gained support from Ramsey and the liberty movement. To do so he would have to be a constitutionalists, which is all that matters.

  6. just went to the website of the one of the candidates this PAC is supporting; same old crap about marriage being between a man and woman but at least he does go on to say states should not be forced to "condone nontraditional marriages" wonder if that would include interracial marriages as well

  7. Tampazeke, are you a libertarian, or just the boss of who is and isn't libertarian?

  8. Somebody's got glitter in their eyes, but it ain't the LGBT supporters of Ron Paul. The GOP convention is in August, to my knowledge so unless someone is psychic, stop letting the MSM spoonfeed you lies and tell you that Mitt's got the nom in the bag. Ron Paul has won the majority of delegates in at least 10 states now.

  9. What's amusing to some people about a 'gay, black, gun store owner'? Seriously, why would anyone be 'surprised' by the existence of a gay, black gun store owner?

And some people on here call me racist?

  11. Freedom is popular! Who wouldn't support Ron Paul? If you care about personal freedom and your rights, then you should vote for Ron Paul.

  12. Really, only one thing needs to be said about Ron Paul when it comes to gay issues: his so-called "We the People Act" is specifically aimed at the federal courts' rulings on sexual privacy. It would have the effect of overturning "Lawrence v. Texas". Never mind marriage equality or civil unions; Ron Paul wants to restore the sodomy laws.

  13. Romney-Paul would be interesting but extremely unlikely. So far, Obama seems ready to stick by Biden, though Clinton would be a better VP ticket.

  14. It's pretty amazing that Doctor Paul has real grass-roots support from EVERY walk of life.
Personally I disagree on his opinion that states should decide marriage equality, even though he says gov't. shouldn't be involved in marriage/personal lives.

  15. Ron Paul says the government shouldn't be involved in marriage, but it's been involved in his own marriage for over 50 years, and he seems to have no problem with that. He also believes that we have no right to use the federal court system to fight for marriage equality. Paul supporters have glitter in their eyes about his success and about his policies, many of which lean conservative Republican more than libertarian.

The same is likely true of the candidates the rich kid's PAC is backing. Look carefully at candidates and their supporters who are using empty "Liberty for All" slogans that ignore the actual positions these so-called libertarian candidates take.

  16. @Ernie:

That's a specious argument. Will you not avail yourself of the protections of civil marriage benefits (if allowed to you) until EVERYONE has marriage equality?

  18. @Jack: You're making a different argument. I'm not arguing that the government should be out of marriage, Paul is. I support civil marriage equality for all Americans and am working for that goal. He's been taking advantage of the 1000+ protections and benefits of government marriage for decades while saying that government has no place in marriage (but the church does). It's hypocritical.

I understand the appeal of Ron Paul on certain issues (even if I don't share the love for him), but his brand of faux-libertarianism would be disastrous for gay rights. Fortunately, there will be no President Paul, but many of the libertarian candidates this PAC is supporting are likely equally bad on gay rights. Voters need to read the fine print because just because the word "liberty" is used doesn't mean the candidate believes in liberty for all in any practical political sense.

The purpose is to remove such issues from the scope of federal consideration so that, you know, we're not talking about things like contraception for months during a Presidential election year while far more important issues are glossed over.

Regarding marriage, Paul believes government at all levels should stay out of the marriage business and only get involved as it would with regards to any other contract between individuals.

  20. Ron Paul supports states rights with marriage because it is a constitutional stance. Ron Paul supports states staying out of marriage because it's the liberty stance. He is both a constitutionalist AND a libertarian - something which at times can be contradictory and he always leans towards the constitution. Anyone looking for the perfect candidate had better stay out of politics. All I know is Ron Paul is 1000x better than Obamney. We need everyone eligible to join the revolution - right now we need precinct chairs. If your deadline has passed you can still become one if there is a vacancy, which there often are. If your deadline has not passed, apply today. We will change the GOP from a homophobic war mongering borderline socialist party to a liberty and peace loving party within 1 election cycle if we all do this.

  21. A follow up, I forgot to stress that the precinct chair strategy has already been successful in preventing Neoconservative and Good Old Boy fraud at several conventions already. If we are to avoid the Oklahoma / Mass fiascos where liberty delegate votes were thrown in the trash, we need liberty state chairs. The way to do this is to become a precinct chair. It is easy, google Ron Paul Precinct Chair. Let the Revolution continue into 2014.

  23. I wish. Still I am doing everything I can to support liberty and get us into the GOP power positions. Will probably vote Gary Johnson in the general though.
