General Mills Opposes Minnesota Gay Marriage Ban

GeneralMillsOne day after a General Mills executive testified before Congress about why the States need inclusive employment non-discrimination legislation, the cereal company announced that it opposes efforts to write a same-sex marriage ban into the Minnesota state constitution.

Via the pro-equality group Minnesotans United for All Families:

Fortune 500 Company General Mills has just announced that the Golden Valley, MN corporation opposes the constitutional amendment seeking to limit the freedom to marry for committed same-sex couples in Minnesota.

Sign our petition today thanking General Mills for supporting all Minnesota families!

You can sign that petition at the group's website.

  1. I'm really hoping that my state will be the first where a voter referendum stands on the side of equal rights. So far things are looking up.

  3. This is also just a couple days after NOM asked Minn companies to remain "neutral" on the matter. I guess this is a big F U to them.

  4. Oh goodie! Another NOM/FRC/AFA/OMM boycott is in play.

I particularly love it when these bigots BUY the product they are supposed to be "boycotting" or "dumping" just to video themselves pouring the contents in the trash/down the drain.

Protip for the bigots: buying Lucky Charms, when you typically by the Walmart brand, just to throw it away, will not 'stick it to' General Mills as much as you'd hope.

  6. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. Take 2 mins and call these companies and THANK them....and let them know you appreciate the stance they are taking. Buy more GM products too. NOM has people that bombard these companies with negative comments, and we need to bombard with absolute positive gratitude.

  8. I was in the room for Ken Powell's announcement. It was an amazing moment, especially when you realize that General Mills has never, ever taken a political position on a social matter, and none of the other Fortune 500 companies in MN have taken an official corporate position on the amendment.

  9. Really happy to see this. The CEO of General Mills made a surprise heartfelt speech to their gay-employees group....there were many cheers.

Also, it's nice that this puts Target and Best Buy and 3M to shame.

Also the CEO of Carlson has come up in full and passionate support of marriage equality. (Carlson is a hotel chain: Radisson among others...)

  14. Isn't their business full of flakes, nuts and fruits? Of course they're going to be supportive.

  16. A great effort by General Mills. We should all take the time and sign the petition. Now, I have to go stock up on some Total cereal.

  17. I salute you General Mills and will eat my Cheerios proudly! Target can continue to suck it.

  18. Remember, if you don't need something like Green Giant vegetables for yourself, you can always buy a box of non-perishables (Cheerios, Wheaties or Fiber One cereal, Old El Paso tacos, etc., etc.) to donate into the FOOD BANK box. (A lot of grocery stores have them.)
General Mills deserves our business (GIS on the NY stock exchange).

  22. I was just on their site. I was surprised at the different brands that I buy that are theirs.
