Chick-Fil-A Chief Dan Cathy Says the Company is 'Guilty as Charged' of its Support for Anti-Gay Causes

Kale

Chick-Fil-A COO Dan Cathy owned up to the company's contributions to anti-gay causes in a recent interview.

"Well, guilty as charged. We are very much supportive of the family -- the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that."

In related news, Chick-Fil-A is also a corporate bully.

  1. According to his website, Dan Cathy perceives himself to be some kind of saint. Prepare to be nauseated. http://www.cathyfamily.com/dan/about.aspx

  2. The biblical definition of family! That's hilarious. Like, doing your sister in law, your daughter, polygamy, patriarchy, slavery. Stoning to death for punishment. If you want it, have at it.

  4. "we're a family-owned business" and we want to crush another family-owned business....

Nice juxtaposition of these two stories!

  5. At least they're finally being honest. They've denied it in the past.

  6. I guess I agree. Better the devil you know, than the one who denies it. I'm glad we don't have any of their restaurants here in MN.

  7. I give them points for being up front with their views. This allows the public to become aware and to make an informed decision about patronizing their establishments or not. I wonder if they stopped sponsoring the LPGA because of the lesbians?

  8. Damn. Why couldn't it be Arby's????

On a different note, a lot of these restaurants are franchised and I know of several gay-owned locations. Do you sell in protest or do make change from the inside?? Also I know several gay folks who worked for Chic-Fil-A and they are decent employers especially in the crazy world of fast-food. I'm sure depending on the owner, that changes.

  9. I was already not eating Chik-Fil-A. I will be encouraging my friends not to give their business to them now.

  10. By the way, the Biblical definition of marriage is "an old man owning however many women and girls he can afford to buy".

  11. I love him. I love the little girl in the hallway saying "It IS a big deal!"

Go gettem! There's a chik-a-fil in West Hollywood. I hope it's going broke.

  12. Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-a, is a paedophile. If anyone were to even start to investigate it, it's all in plain sight.

  14. Goodbye Chick-Fil-a (A poem of loss)

Chick-Fil-a, you are woe unto me,
that loved you all my days.
But our love is ended bitterly,
    Because you hate the gays.

    Polynesian sauce, waffle fry,
And all the other menu items,
    I’ll never get to try.
And your funny cow advertising campaign.
    To all of it, goodbye.

    Sandwich, nuggets, strips, and salad,
    Chickin’ so many ways.
But nary a morsel will again touch my lips,
    Because you hate the gays.

Those inspirational stories on your cups,
    Inspire me no more.
I don’t care that your bathrooms were usually pretty clean…
You and me, we are at war.

And to all my friends who have known grace
While shoving a spicy chickin’ sandwich in your face
The time has come, the time is now
To eat less chickin’ and instead more cow,
Because food that contains more hate than sodium
Should cause you to step up on the podium,
And tell the world to change its chickin’ eating ways,
Because chick-fil-a, seriously, hates the gays.

And is never open on Sundays. Which is really stupid.

  15. they've made it clear. they don't want or need your gay dollars, so, don't eat there. simple.

  16. I've heard calls for boycotts of Chil-fil-a, but honestly, I don't see it making much of an impact. (They've all but put full page ads in the bibles of most of the megachurches...)

I say that we make Chik-fil-a the LGBT place to be every Sunday. No protesting, no anger or yelling, nothing "inappropriate" or"indecent" just show up, order the cheapest thing on the menu (and don't eat it). And just hang out. Make sure they have no reason at all to throw you out or call the cops so that when they do, then we can really make a stink.

  17. Gay organizations- ESPECIALLY in Los Angeles where this horrible fast foood chain is now poppping up everywhere, should start a campaign dedicated to LGBT people in informing them about this companies proud homophobia.

I have sooo many gay friends who had no clue about this companies homophobic ways. I informed them and they were shocked.

Every dollar you spend at this fast food joint is being invested in stripping you of your rights.... Again, I repeat.... THE MONEY YOU SPEND AT CHIK FILET IS BEING INVESTED IN CAMPAIGNING AGAINST YOUR LIVELIHOOD AND RIGHTS

I wish equalityNow would start a campaign aimed at LGBT to educate them on this companies stance.

  18. Wow.... His words are powerful, hateful and strong. Shame on this company to opress gay people further than we are. They take pride in actively working against our rights. These people are worse than NOM. It's like NOM with a lemonade stand taking everyones money and devoting it to homophobia.

  19. Um weathervane, chik is closed on Sundays...

    Posted by: Michael | Jul 17, 2012 2:49:24 PM

  20. As My gay friends and I always say, instead of eating at Chik-fil-a just contribute money to the National Organization for Marriage on their website. Chik- fil- a has donated money to NOM in the past. So if you're a gay person and want to eat at Chik-fil-a, just cut the middle man out and donate money to NOM and a few anti gay organizations like the Family Council Research and even One Million Moms. That way, you're money will end up going where it would have had you spent it at Chik-fil-a and you'll save yourself from eating terrible unhealthy fast food.

  21. My close friend who is a lesbian was a manager at a Chik-Fil-A that closed not long ago, and she and the higher ups contributed it to the local boycotts by local LGBT's who worked hard to educate people locally about the store. After a year an half from opening it's doors, it closed down, and as my friend said..... She was not upset.

Here's a few fun facts for you:

The chicken is hardly fresh, everything is frozen and heated and the chicken in stock must be sold or else the company looses profit, so yeah, that hard/dry chicken you had that one day was probably from the 'Must be used' pile. It's hardly healthy, if you only knew how much grease is used from the buns to the sides. And the kicker was, she said no one knew she was gay and from her observations, homophobia reigns supreme not only with the founders but all the higher ups. From staff, to district managers to fellow managers, homophobic commentary is perfectly acceptable if not encouraged and used by everyone. And they truly can't stand us, she said. She said she actually feared being outted considering the sentiment of those around her, she feared the consequences of anyone suspecting she was gay. Needless to say, her exact words were "gay people should stay as far away from that store as possible. It's more welcoming to chicken than gays"

  22. @Kyle Ohten - WORD!

    Posted by: AZEXPAT | Jul 17, 2012 3:00:51 PM

  23. This is basically a version of modern day segregation. With Chik-fil-a's many homophobic comments an actions throughout the years, they are basically putting up a big sign in front of all their stores that reads
    'NO GAYS ALLOWED'

    Posted by: GayFather | Jul 17, 2012 3:02:03 PM

  24. I guess my point is that they are discriminating, perhaps even targeting gay people in a very "above board", "clean hands" way, so I'm proposing the same type of response. My suspicion is that a lot of the people who eat there are aware of their stance, and that's the main reason they are there. I believe that those people would be intolerant of our presence. Think lunch-counter sit-ins from the 50s...
And thank you Michael, that was very helpful.

    Posted by: weathervane | Jul 17, 2012 3:05:09 PM

  25. I agree with other posters that the response to this by LGBT groups has not be effective or strong enough. Every single 35+ million gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual in this country should be better informed about this companies anti LGBT stance. I'm afraid they are not. This company makes more money than we can wrap our minds around. People should be better educated on exactly who their hard earned dollars is being given too, and galvanized gay leaders should not be timid to say so.

This would be a perfect opportunity for gay coalitions to work hand in hand on a campaign better informing our people about this companies brand and mission statement. We owe it to our own people
