NHL Goalie Tim Thomas: 'I Stand with Chick-fil-A'

Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas decided to come out publicly on Thursday in support of Chick-fil-A on his Facebook page:

ThomasI stand with Chick-fil-A.

Chick-fil-A is privately owned by the Cathy family. The company president, Dan Cathy, drew the wrath of gay rights advocates and supporters when he made recent statements that some have alleged are anti-gay.

Cathy told Baptist Press that the company was unapologetically in favor of traditional marriage.

"Guilty as charged," he said. "We are very much supportive of the family -- the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that."

In a separate interview on the Ken Coleman Show -- Cathy suggested that the nation could face God's wrath over the redefinition of marriage.

"I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, 'We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,'" Cathy said. "I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we would have the audacity to try to redefine what marriage is all about."

Facebook wasn't kind:

  1. You didn't bother covering the NHL players who have spoken out as our allies like Mike Modano and Zdeno Chara this week, but you gave air time to this idiot? Why?

  2. So now we know he's a closet case.

  4. What did Mike Modano and Zdeno Chara say?

  5. The wrath and venom that comes the from the anti-Cathy people defines them. No differing opinions allowed here. Go screw ass if you think that will get you anywhere. That's what you're really "fighting" for? Idiots.

  7. Ya know... you can support Chick-fil-A all you want, but if you look at them and can't see that they are, in fact, anti-gay, well, you're just not that bright.

  8. He has the right to say what he said. If you disagree with him say so and stop going to Bruins games and tell them why.

  9. MATT sounds like a great guy, bet he's hot!!

  10. So many people think it's all about Cathy "just expressing his opinion." They don't realize that he is giving millions in corporate profits to groups that think it is okay to discriminate against certain Americans based on how they are born. Personal opinions are great, using corporate profits to encourage discrimination blows.

  11. Perhaps he is just uneducated about all of the facts? I could be wrong, but I may be right. If I am right, I don't think the facts are going to be conveyed to him by telling him to burn in hell or saying how much you like to see him get beat up at a hockey game.

On the off chance that perhaps he doesn't know why we do not like Chick-Fil-a, I left him a nice note detailing many points, including the activities of CFA. Skipping the ad-hominims, because they detract from the conversation.

  12. Today, just use one of the store managers said, basically, that he doesn't think Cathy hates gays, but that "Cathy also doesn't think that, gays should be allowed to start families."

That is a pretty damn impressively brutal thing to think much less put those words in your boss's mouth. I felt like I needed a shower after reading that tidbit. Now the ball's in Cathy's court, is this manager accurately reporting his sentiments?

  13. That's too bad cuz he's so f**able. The Bruins will not be too thrilled about this. I encourage NHL fans to catcall him next game.

  14. Andrew,

No reason to boycott anyone here. Tim Thomas no longer plays for the Bruins or any team in the NHL.

The Bruins captain Zdeno Chara has been outspoken about gay rights, he recorded one of the first you-can-play videos that aired nationally and in Canada.

  15. Tim Thomas is one of the most hated hockey plays around, so basically, this simply further cements him as someone who is reviled by most hockey fans (and people in general). Sad too given the You Can Play project has been a great success.

  16. Brother against brother sister against sister and so they chose sides, evil against love, north against south to fight a losing war against freedom so the evil could have slavery. Lies against truth. In the end everybody lost something and only the bankers and the makers of bomb and bullets and machines of war made money while countless people died and were wounded and still we fight for freedom. When will Americans truly be able to say they are honestly free, free to love free to be happy, totally free? Why must we fight and destroy each other to be free to love the ones we love? It is time to stop those few who pretend to be the holy ones who use people to get their evil ways and fail as humans to treat other humans fairly and justly.

  17. Sweet speech. But why in 2012 is it time love, love, love of the same sex? Love is a chemical reaction, and has a duration. " Chemicals in the brain — dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin — play a role in romantic passion." Time What happens when it wears off?

  18. MATT, you're an idiot.

  19. He's just another failure who is desperate for attention. He's like Tebow - he doesn't actually believe all this crap, he just knows that if he says it he gets free publicity and those right wing crazies will buy his books etc and give him a second income when he retires. It's so predictable.

  20. I don't like that he supports Chick-A-Fil, but some of those comments are just wrong. I won't be going to Chick-A-Fil, and I won't go to or watch a Bruins game. I also don't wish harm to this guy.

  21. Ahhhhhh a White Homophobe who'da thunk!

Posted by: Chris Dachocolatebearcub | Jul 27, 2012 1:00:36 AM

  22. I love that the gay community has a fire under our often, we used to meet gays who were WEAK, timid, and the reason homophobia exists because they'd read up on a Chik Fil A supporter and say "oh,'s just their opinion and they disagree with me."

I HATE...yes, HATE. Hate with a PASSION gays who chalk up homophobes as "just someone who disagrees with me"

It's because of you complacent, WEAK souls that gay kids are bullied to death. You're scared spineless sheep. I applaud the people who left him a message.

  23. I'm so sick of being told that people who want to BREAK APART gay families are not bad people, and are entitled to think how they wish. Chik Fil A and it's supporters are campaigning to break gay families apart. They are the devil. They are evil. And there are not enough words to convey how truly evil they are. We should be fighting them with every ounce of power we have.

    Posted by: JoJansen | Jul 27, 2012 1:03:57 AM

  24. He's an ignorant POS siding with a corporation that ruins the lives, and strips the rights of millions of LGBT. Chik Fil A is the modern segregation establishment. Sign petitions, attend protests and get the word out on this horrible company.

  25. This quote from a story by Michael Allen, Thu, July 26, 2012:

"The million dollar question about controversial CEO Dan Cathy, prompted this answer: "Dan Cathy doesn't 'hate' gays either. He just doesn't think they should be allowed to marry and I'm sure he doesn't believe they should start families."

In all my life, I doubt I've ever read anything so astoundingly and inhumanly cruel, delivered in such flip, offhand manner, I'm completely gob-smacked!
