U.S. Embassies In Latin America Get Down With Gay Pride

ElSalvadorSecretary of State Hillary Clinton has made no secret of her commitment to LGBT rights around the world. "Gay rights are human rights," she has said on a number of occasions. Apparently her State Department colleagues in Latin America agree.

Only a few weeks after it was reported that the U.S. Embassy in Kenya was celebrating pride, Andrés Duque reports that half-a-dozen U.S. satellites in the Latin America took part in their own pride events.

For example, Anne Andrew, the U.S. Ambassador to Costa Rica, held a "roundtable" on LGBT rights there, while the U.S. Ambassador to Honduras, Lisa Kubiske, sent out a tweet reiterating the States' engagement on LGBT issues. "The US Government supports the Honduran LGBT community in their fight for equality and respect," she wrote.

Officials in Chile, Panama, El Salvador and Ecuador also sent representatives to pride parades or held their own events, including a high heel race to erode traditional gender norms in Ecuador. As you can see in the photo above, the participants were in it to win it.

  1. A statement in support of marriage equality would be nice from the Secretary of State.

  2. My goodness. What happened to the circumcision story? Why was the story about Rabbis, circumcision, infant boys, and sexually transmitted diseases taken down?

We can say whatever we want about Christians, Baptists, Catholics, Muslims. I don't have a problem with that. Why is the circumcision subject so sensitive?

This says a lot about TR.

  3. Yeah, Rat, it's a floating crapshoot here on TR sometimes. Let's assume that fluffy, gossipy stories will always win out here. Plus, let's get a campaign going to demand TR use spell-check before posting any item.

  6. I am getting fed up with people implying that the Gay Rights movement is out to "erode traditional gender norms"! That's nothing but radical Left Wing bullsh*t! I have no problem with heterosexual folk following binary gender norms. Those norms happen to be natural to them. They just aren't natural to me as a Gay man.

I insist on the right of LGBT folk to express gender in their own way, but I'm certainly not interested in forcing the Straight world to follow our lead. That's what I'd call reverse gender fascism. When will we ever stop politicizing gender? Just let it be what it is: Male, female or transgender.

Incidentally, expressing my female aspect has never and will never involve dressing in drag or racing down a public street in high heels. Some of us out here know how to respect our femininity. Gender-neutral men don't have to act like refugees from a La Cage Aux Folles rehearsal!
