Presidential Debate Moderators Announced; Candy Crowley to Be First Woman in 20 Years

The Commission on Presidential Debates has chosen the moderators for the upcoming tussles, Politico reports:

CrowleyPBS's Jim Lehrer will host the first presidential debate on October 3 in Denver, Colo. CNN's Candy Crowley will host the second, town-hall debate on October 16 in Hempstead, N.Y. CBS's Bob Schieffer will host the third debate on October 22 in Boca Raton, Fla. ABC's Martha Raddatz will host the vice presidential debate on October 11 in Danville, Ky.

Crowley will be the first woman to moderate in 20 years:

The last woman to moderate a presidential debate was Carole Simpson in 1992. Barbara Walters also hosted two presidential debates, in 1976 and 1984.

In July Crowley moderated a U.S. Senate debate in Virginia between former Governors George Allen and Tim Kaine. She also moderated a debate between U.S. Senate candidates in Florida ahead of the 2010 election.

  1. A gain in one area is a loss in another: all the moderators are white for the first time since 1996 (when they were not only all white but all Jim Lehrer). Before that, you have to go all the way back to 1984 for another all-white group of moderators.

  2. I guess it was unrealistic to hope for Amy Goodman or Rachel Maddow.

  4. Didn't Gwen Ifill moderate a debate during the last election?

  9. Well, I was hoping for Diane Sawyer or Christiane Amanpour, but Crowley has some decent credentials and a lot of experience behind her. Oprah would've been too softball, Meredith Viera is too funny, and Katie Couric and Barbara Walters are busy with their talk shows. (Hey, be grateful it wasn't Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter, or others of that ilk.)

  10. GOP Sow? Conservative propoagansist? I thought CNN was just full of left-leaning, liberal elitists?

  12. what?

CNN hasn't been truthful let alone liberal since Ted Turner sold it to Time Warner (whose majority stock holders are Saudi Arabians)

Ted Turner has since stated he would never ever have sold CNN if he knew then what he knows now. That CNN is not news anymore, and it is nothing like what he created

  13. Crowley and Bob Schieffer are absolutely terrible choices. A couple of simpering, elite-deferring news readers who worship at the alter of false equivalence. At least Lehrer is something approaching a journalist.

I was hoping for Bill Moyers, but of course, these two candidates would never agree to anyone who's actually going to ask them intelligent questions or hold them accountable for their blathering responses.

  14. Idiots abound. Candy Crowley would be more left leaning. Moderators don't make or break a debate. Kennedy beat Nixon because he looked so awful in that debate.

  15. First woman in 20 years? Didn't Gwen Ifill do one last time?

  16. She is a good journalist. I think she is a good choice.

  17. @SAT WHAT?

Then you might want to alert the GOP/conservatives, they have been throwing the "CNN is liberal" mantra for years. But your argument is about them being "truthful" which is completely different from what I was even talking about.
