2012 Election | Barack Obama | Gay Marriage

Singer Ben Gibbard Backs Obama Because Obama Backs Marriage Equality

BenGibbardBen Gibbard, the singer best known for his work with Death Cab for Cutie, has joined author Dave Eggers and music manager Jordan Kurland's efforts to reelect President Obama.

His reason? President Obama supports gay marriage. Here's a bit of Gibbard's testimonial, as told to his lesbian sister and her wife's future grandchildren, who of course can't envision a time when same-sex marriage wasn't accepted:

A lot of credit also had to go to our President, Barack Obama. In May of 2012, he went on national TV and expressed his support for gay marriage. It may be hard to believe but at the time, this was quite a controversial position to some people. He said he had "gone through an evolution" on the matter and felt it was time to share this view with the country (Vice President Biden also kind of forced his hand on the timing of this announcement but hey, who cares now?). He was the first U.S. president to voice support for marriage equality. His support continued through his second term and helped us get to where we are today: Gay couples that choose to get married receive the same rights and recognitions as straight ones.

The singer goes on to say he "want[s] a president who recognized that gay or straight, the rights of marriage couples should be equal."

  1. Why is it that straight men always use the lesbian notion as a reason for supporting gay rights? It seems very fake and sleazy. It's as if they only accept lesbians and not gay men.

Well, I don't need that kind of support, thank you very much. Straight guys can go jump, and they can take their double standards with them.

His sister is a lesbian, moron. I have not noticed the trend you described, although straight men are obviously more tolerant of lesbians in general.

I think the straight male animus against gay men comes mainly from a) the fear of their own same-sex desires, b) a natural revulsion at anal penetration, which we have elevated to the status of sacrament with tragic results, and c) the influence of Judeo-Christian "morality." This is all cultural and eventually it will change, or so I hope.

  6. Will -- The President is working on that.

Congress has to repeal DOMA. But since that's not likely, the President and Attorney General decided not to defend a law they (and most legal scholars) consider unconstitutional.

Several lawsuits have made their way to the Supreme Court, which will probably rule on the issue in the upcoming session.

So, it's happening and he's done as much as possible considering the separation of powers.
