SPLC Responds To Tony Perkins' 'Outrageous' Claims

SPLCMark Potok, Senior Fellow of the Southern Poverty Law Center, penned a post this afternoon in which he takes on Family Research Council president Tony Perkins and others' assertion that SPLC deserves blame for yesterday's shooting at his organization's HQ.

Reminding readers that his organization has spent four decades working to end political violence and have "strongly criticized all those who endorse such violence, whether on the political left or the political right," Potok says that Perkins' remarks are "outrageous" and amount to nothing more than a craven attempt to score political points.

From Potok's response:

Perkins’ accusation is outrageous. The SPLC has listed the FRC as a hate group since 2010 because it has knowingly spread false and denigrating propaganda about LGBT people — not, as some claim, because it opposes same-sex marriage. The FRC and its allies on the religious right are saying, in effect, that offering legitimate and fact-based criticism in a democratic society is tantamount to suggesting that the objects of criticism should be the targets of criminal violence.

Perkins and his allies, seeing an opportunity to score points, are using the attack on their offices to pose a false equivalency between the SPLC’s criticisms of the FRC and the FRC’s criticisms of LGBT people. The FRC routinely pushes out demonizing claims that gay people are child molesters and worse — claims that are provably false. It should stop the demonization and affirm the dignity of all people.

  1. Since Miss Tonette doesn't have a decent bone in her body, it's highly unlikely she'll retract anything she ever says, however much of a lie it is proven to be. She is a vile creature worthy of the hate she sells.

  2. If Mr. Potok's target audience is the FRC and their supporters, he should probably use smaller words and shorter sentences.

  3. RayRayJ is correct -perhaps Mr. Potok could through in some phrases from the FRC's favorite tome- the Buy Bull and that might get their attention- it won't change their point of view however.

SPLC's response was reasoned and factual- two traits the FRC cannot relate to.

  4. make that "throw" in some phrases...

  5. We need to educate the news media that they are a hate group and should be introduced that way when they are interviewed.

Tonight on abc we have the president of the certified hate group tony Perkins to discuss his hate groups position.

  6. I don't care how horrible a man you think Tony Perkins is or how horrible you think his organization is, it does us no good when gay people and/or their ally shoot innocent people.

  7. Tony Perkins and Brian Brown made a big mistake by calling out SPLC. More people are now learning of FRC's status as a "hate group".

  8. The SPLC should simplify: Sorry your security guard got shot, but you're still lying anti-gay propaganda spreading pricks and we have the data to back it up.

  9. Let's throw FRC backer, NOM/Brown/Gallagher, into the hate group category, since one of the criteria is throwing out specious and untrue facts about gays. Can hate-chicken be far behind?

    Posted by: woodroad34 | Aug 16, 2012 8:29:39 PM

  10. We already have "NOM Exposed." How about "FRC Exposed," "FoTF Exposed," "AFTAH Exposed," etc., etc?

People need to see these orgainzations for what they are: Liars, demonizers, and villifiers of LGBT folks for both profit and political gain. Right before this election would be a great time to go for a full eviceration of their BS.

  12. The SPLC is a hate group who knowingly spread false and denigrating propaganda about gentiles.

  13. Neither the SPLC or the FRC are "hate" groups. They are groups of people with very different social and political views. In a democracy they take their cases to the people who decide which group to side with in elections. If one side or another pours billions into false advertizing and the voters buy the lies, so be it. We get the kind of government we deserve.

  14. The SPLC is nothing but a JEW run hate group. Jews are the original Nazi's and terrorists! Those people who are shooting places and people up should start targeting Jews. Walk in and take out as many of the Satanic Tribe as possible. Jews deserve to be destroyed once and for all!

  16. The SPLC is a jewish run hate group devoted to destroying the European people and culture. Everything the SPLC sponsors is anti-Christian , anti-god , anti-white . The demons that run the SPLC have the ultimate goal of destroying the white race. All you whites that believe in this so call multicultural change have been fooled into killing your own kind. I pray to God that one day we will defeat the devil spawn. The Jew has no love for anyone but his own as their talmud teaches them. Do your own research on them you will learn I speak the truth.

  17. Antisemitism is SO 1930's.

Though I DO so LOVE it when the jackbooted thugs come out from under their rocks long enough to show their true colors, which, invariably, are ALWAYS YELLOW.

  18. Antiaryanism is SO 1940's.

But I do love it when the sidelocked thugs come out from under their rocks long enough to show their true colors, which, invariably, are ALWAYS YELLOW.

  19. The message to all these HATE groups, especially the religious fanatical organizations that closet queen tony perkins makes money of: STOP HATING.

Enough of these stupid "cultural wars". Tony Perkins and his stupid kind started this situation and they ARE hate groups that need to need to just stop with the hate. ENOUGH!

They don't want crazy people to go after them?

Then STOP being crazy and HATEFUL against other people.
Live your own life and stop showing HATE toward others!

  20. WOW, Towleroad now has NeoNazis and Christianists posting here, and I thought Rick was a problem... sigh...

  21. "Tonight on abc we have the president of the certified hate group tony Perkins to discuss his hate groups position."

Mother Jones had a recent posting about how neutral the liberal news media are trying to be - so much so that they are not willing to point out the truth when it's not being said. Moreover, the author pointed out that unlike Obama, Romney has understood this and is running with it. And does he ever!

  22. The SPLC is the most prosperous and powerful hate group in this country and Mr.Potok is one of the few people on the face of the earth that can match Barry Kardashian Soetoro Obama when it comes to being dishonest.

    Posted by: b-rad | Aug 17, 2012 12:36:35 PM

  23. The problem for the SPLC is that it's hard to fight a political battle with just the facts. You need to have a rhetorical edge too. As long as the media give Perkins a platform to stand on, he's going to spout and spout. I'm sure that the SPLC is far less well known now than the FRC to the general public. That's not going to help either.

  24. Are Towleroad comments even moderated anymore? At all? There's been a spam posting here for almost 24 hours. Not to mention the neo-nazis.
