Wayne Besen: A Gunman's 'Associate'? A 'Murderous Homosexual'?

Wayne_besen-766081Getting Wayne Besen off The O'Reilly Factor has, in the past 48 hours, become an obsession on the anti-gay right. Andrew Belonsky wrote about its first stirrings on Thursday, when several ex-gay groups jointly published a press release directed at FOX News, the nastiest paragraph of which might have been:

We ask the News Corporation, Fox News, and Bill O'Reilly to find more ethical spokespersons for the liberal view of sexuality. In their infamous Washington Post ad accusing FRC of hateful values, Besen and the SPLC claim that "words have consequences."  Yes, they do. And Besen's may lead to violence.

Wayne Besen is the founder of Truth Wins Out, and he occasionally appears on television to say nice things about the Southern Poverty Law Center -- the same Southern Poverty Law Center that's labeled the Family Research Center a "hate group" (partially because the FRC has stumped for legislation legalizing the execution of "repeat homosexual offenders" in Uganda), and who, therefore, are supposedly responsible for last week's non-fatal shooting of an FRC security guard by a crazyperson.

Now, the anti-Besenites have become totally unglued. They've penned a petition, bound for FOX News and signed by such headlining homophobes as Scott Lively, Matt Barber, Matt Staver, and Peter LaBarbera, in which they accuse Besen of being an "associate" of the FRC gunman. They ask readers to sign the petition, and finish off with this PS:

P.S. Thank you for standing with us against anti-Christian violence by murderous homosexuals.  Please forward this free petition widely to your friends!

Even Peter LaBarbera -- even Bryan Fischer -- has never before gone quite so far as to call a famous, non-violent gay activist "murderous." This is usually Fred Phelps's territory.

Wayne Besen responds here.

  1. Fair and balanced? Go f@ck yourselves Fox News.

  2. O'Reilly factor is on FOX News and Bill has thus far stood by Besen -- I think it actually shakes up pundits (who are bags of hot air) when other pundits are threatened, even if those pundits are gay.

It's been said before, and I'll say it again: if you want to see the Christianist right's agenda, look at EXACTLY WHAT THEY ACCUSE THE OTHER SIDE OF.

Brudging admiration: they are also masters of taking the best of their opponents' actions (i.e. anti-hate legislation, civil rights language) and using the exact same tactics in their favor. So now, following Christian violence against gay victims, we have a narrative of gay violence against Christian victims!

Despite the thousands of gay deaths at the hands of Christian homophobes, there has NEVER been a SINGLE instance of gay violence against Christians until the FRC shooting. When I think of how the FRC and is still invited onto MSNBC to spin their lies with Scott Lively, it makes my blood boil, considering they are a force behind the actual killing of innocent gay civilians in Africa.

P.S. There are all kinds of gay people, just like there are all kinds of Christians, so it's possible that we have a crazy gunman who is gay, but something in the milk ain't clean, and I can't help but wonder if the whole thing was staged, if the shooter is our Lee Harvey Oswald... that said, every single gay organization has condemned the shooting, yet the FRC still lies, and stil mobilizes against our people. Christianist America is a sick sick place.

  3. Amazing. Their "freedom of speech" chicken sandwiches haven't even digested yet....

  4. "This is usually Fred Phelps's territory."

Anyone who thinks there's a difference between the likes of LaBarbera and Fischer, and Fred Phelps, isn't really listening. The words are a bit different, but the messages are the same.

  6. @STREPSI:

What you say is the truth. 100% FACTual. Why so many people in America has trouble realizing this, and it's implications not only for gay people, but indeed ALL real freedom-loving people in America, regardsless of various sexual leanings, is nothing but mind-blowing.

This is the true face on evil on Earth unleashed (as it were), staring all of you right in the eyes, laying out their twisted agenda for all to see, in broad daylight... How can anyone tolerate this any longer? It's time to let these lowlifes know that their "15 minutes of "free speech"" is over.

It's proven time and time again with REAL, scientific FACTS, that they are wrong, as in lying shamelessly. No more "free speech" for these vile MF's, I say. When you have to lie, you simply have no case what-so-ever! It's time to tell these haters to sit their azzes down, and STFU.

Now, THERE's a law worthy of comsideration...

Best wishes to all good people in USA, I know there are many. Far outnumbering all the morons you have to deal with on a daily basis. I don't envy you at all, but you surely have my sympathy. You need to get this whole issue of seperation of "church" and State. Soon. The consequences are beyond frightening to comtemplate.

    xXx

  7. Correction to the above:

"You need to get this whole issue of seperation of "church" and State *sorted out*"

  8. The real problem here is I think that people have been exposing the "ex-gay" movement for the past couple of years and making it look like a joke. They have to do some PR. Its very similar to the "legitimate" rape scenerio. If people cant be de-gayed then homosexuality isnt a choice. If its not a choice then their entire crusade is based on one minor and brief sentance in their bible. You cant have FOX viewers catching on the ex-gay movement is a load of crap

  9. Besen should look into a defamation lawsuit.

  10. "P.S. There are all kinds of gay people, just like there are all kinds of Christians, so it's possible that we have a crazy gunman who is gay, but something in the milk ain't clean, and I can't help but wonder if the whole thing was staged..."

A guy gets shot in the arm where the damage is so terrible, he needs multiple surgeries, but he manages to hold down 250 pound Corkins until the cops come.

No one on the gay scene has heard of or knows of Corkins. There are zero pre-shooting photos of Corkins available, but at least four of the guy that got shot. No photos at Pride parades. No friends to come forward and talk about Floyd being extreme with his positions. Just a single quote about "homosexuals" from Mom and Dad.

He volunteers less than once weekly at the D.C. LGBT Center for six months, but no coworkers are privy to his extreme passion and hatred for the FRC.

The facts of the shooting were known the instant the story broke, down to the line about Corkins not liking the FRC's "politics." We're still finding out new tidbits about yesterday's shooting that were originally incorrectly reported. (by the way, "I don't like your politics" is an incredibly bland statement, though one that can certainly be leveraged by the FRC).

He grows up an Air Force kid and attends a very Christian school.

Are we crazy like the Birthers for questioning a shooting that has next to nothing in common with any other shootings we've seen played out in the media over the past few years? Maybe. But this thing still stinks to high heII.

  11. And yet when a liberal group wants to get a conservative off a tv program, the conservatives complain that their 1st amendment rights are being violated.

I know -- it's stupid, they don't understand freedom of speech. But I do love the hypocracy. Where is Sarah Palin and others defending Wayne's freedom of speech?

  12. Regarding the comment, "A guy gets shot in the arm where the damage is so terrible, he needs multiple surgeries, but he manages to hold down 250 pound Corkins until the cops come."

Some press releases are claiming "multiple surgeries". A few news articles, however, claim that the guard has been released from the hospital and stated that he may need an additional surgery.

My guess: there's a possibility of some internal scaring after as the initial injury heals and a second surgery might be needed to remove this scar tissue or at least break it up so it won't leave the arm stiff or prone to future injuries.

While one would naturally hope that the guard fully recovers quickly, it seems the FRC and other right wingers are trying to milk the injury for whatever propaganda value they can get out of it. "Multiple surgeries" sounds worse than "a second (possibly minor) surgery." None of the accounts indicated what the second surgery is for nor how invasive it is. It's reasonable not to let out that information to respect the guard's privacy, but groups shouldn't use that lack of information as an excuse to get away with putting out misleading statements.

  13. This is mostly due to the complete ineptitude of gay 'advocacy groups' to defend anyone in the community. They barely lift a finger while conservative groups gang up on individuals. However, Besen could turn this around to become better known.

  14. This is slander. This is defamation.

These people need to be taken to court.

  15. Let's see: Wayne Besen is Floyd Corkin's associate, a murderous homosexual, the antichrist (an e-mail used by the wingnuts to attract new signers to the petition was [email protected] ...).

I think Besen describes it best when he writes on his site: "Clearly, the over-the-top rhetoric coming from the individuals who signed this letter speaks for itself and they do not practice what they preach. They will do and say virtually anything to slime opponents who expose their misinformation and misdeeds. "

Wayne Besen is a real hero of the LGBT community and deserves our full support.

  17. We need to start a petition to keep Wayne Besen who tells the truth about the antigay Christian hate groups.

    Posted by: Mike | Aug 25, 2012 11:59:05 PM

  18. Wow. I knew these guys were nuts, but this exceeds even my most comedic parody of their stupidity. The more this "petition" is shown to normal people, the more people will come over to our side -- even people nominally aligned with the anti-gay right.

As for Wayne, he should retain an attorney and sue the authors of the petition for libel. The claims that he "facilitated the shooting" as an "associate of the shooter" are completely fabricated malicious libel that are damaging to his reputation if repeated.

  19. "REAL, scientific FACTS"

Just remember the Religious Right live in a different universe where they have their own real, scientific facts to back up their claims, like the recent Akins debacle. They're even promoting a full curriculum in their own image. At least the University of California won a law suit to dismiss their "science" courses as not acceptable for the purposes of admission requirements.

  20. Murderous?

    Isn't that libel?

    Posted by: Houndentenor | Aug 26, 2012 10:35:44 AM

  21. Earlier this year I did retain a lawyer and actually sued PFOX and Greg Quinlan after he fabricated a story on television saying that I had instructed people to murder him.

    http://www.truthwinsout.org/feature/2012/02/22427/

Unfortunately, the case was dismissed because the court deemed me a "public figure" which raises the bar for proving libel -- even in cases as clear cut as the one involving PFOX.

I would not rule out such a case again and would not hesitate to sue. But, the lawyers would have to instruct me that the case was strong enough to overcome the difficult legal obstacles.

Thank you to those who have offered their support -- I appreciate it.

  23. "the case was dismissed because the court deemed me a "public figure" which raises the bar for proving libel"

It would seem to me, then, that such a precedent opens some "interesting" opportunities for activists. If they can claim that you're an "associate" of the FRC shooter who "facilitated" the shooting out of "murderous" intent and face no consequences, it would appear that activists can begin similar countermeasures against the haters themselves.

That's the trouble with "going nuclear." It can be sent right back at them.
