Hackers Claim to Have Romney Tax Returns, Demand Ransom

A hacker group says it has obtained Mitt Romney's tax returns, Mashable reports:

RomneyThe group allegedly obtained the files from PricewaterhouseCooper’s Tennessee office on Aug. 25, in what was described on PasteBin as a Mission Impossible-like caper:

Romney’s 1040 tax returns were taken from the PWC office 8/25/2012 by gaining access to the third floor via a gentleman working on the 3rd floor of the building. Once on the 3rd floor, the team moved down the stairs to the 2nd floor and setup shop in an empty office room. During the night, suite 260 was entered, and all available 1040 tax forms for Romney were copied. A package was sent to the PWC on suite 260 with a flash drive containing a copy of the 1040 files, plus copies were sent to the Democratic office in the county and copies were sent to the GOP office in the county at the beginning of the week also containing flash drives with copies of Romney’s tax returns before 2010. A scanned signature image for Mitt Romney from the 1040 forms were scanned and included with the packages, taken from earlier 1040 tax forms gathered and stored on the flash drives.

The document says that the returns will be released on September 28 unless a random of $1 million in Bitcoins —"an online currency that is difficult both to trace and to identify" — is paid, according to Mashable.

In other news, Romney is doing his debate prep at a $3.9 million mansion in Vermont.

  4. Only a million? If the information is worth holding ransom then ask for more. If not, they are going to end up making him look like a victorious person who doesn't give in. I think this is a stunt and he will call their bluff. What are the tax returns gonna say? He is rich? We all know that.

  7. Hey question mark troll... If the Obama campaign had Romney's tax returns, they would just publish them. These people that stole the returns (if this isn't a hoax) are instead looking for money. Romney enabled this whole situation by refusing to release his tax returns and thus making them highly valuable (you'd think a businessman would know what creates value). He could just release them, you know? Like his own father did when he ran for president, you know?

  8. @Me

    Andy's site has homosexual "tendencies."

It's not and it's never been 100% "gay news". And I can't think of a gay blog that has 100% gay news.

  10. So when the taxes are not released, we are led to believe the ransom was paid. Great political maneuver!

  11. be a good american and RElease them for ALL to see

  12. The Democratic office they were sent to should confirm that they got a copy. And by confirm I say have a public show of them handing the copies over to the Republicans because they don't want to stoop to such a level. Which of course, they really have no problem doing...it just looks good.

  13. DNC should distance itself instantly from this by denouncing it since it is illegal

Though I highly suspect it is untrue and possibly (tin foil hat time)a false flag pronouncment to try to tarnish dems with some sort of Nixonian breaking and entering thing as vs people demanding to see mittens tax returns....

  14. 3.9 million.

So Romney's friend is one of those our of state a-holes running up prices on real estate so real Vermonters can't afford them any more. Thanks a lot!

  15. Romney is a rich pariah who simply can’t identify with ANY average American through his fog of lies and network of havened money. He’ll only continue to get booed out of the room by every group of minority and middle class voters he comes across. His religion and wealth is highly elitist and everyone in this country has had it with his kind. We’re telling Mitt he can’t buy this election! 17. This sort of blackmail is illegal. Oddly, other forms of blackmail are not.

  18. If they have already sent copies of the returns to the Democrats, pray tell what force the ransom demand would have?

    Posted by: Bakeley | Sep 5, 2012 5:00:14 PM

  19. Come on, this is a double down - Rmoney's campaign instigated this hoax because of the favorable reception of FLOTUS' speech last night, knowing that the Dems would be blamed for it. Their goal: deflect the inevitable bounce that Obama will receive at the end of the convention.

    Clever, but despicable.

  24. If this is not a hoax, it is robbery and attempted blackmail. If real, hopefully they will be caught and prosecuted. Whoever these misguided individuals are they are making Romney a more sympathetic figure in the minds of some voters.
