Anti-Gay Russians Send Summons To Madonna's NYC Pad

6a00d8341c730253ef01676955f5b4970b-800wiConservative activists in St. Petersburg are still trying to sue Madonna for hurting their feelings when she spoke out in favor of social progress and equality during a recent concert there.

Antigay Russian activists have obtained Madonna’s home address in New York City and sent her a summons to show up at a Russian court. Nine plaintiffs are desperate to make "Madge" pay after suffering “moral damages” at her gig in St. Petersburg.

Another summons was issued to the address of Madonna’s gym Hard Candy in central Moscow. However, gym staff insist they have not received any letter from St. Petersburg, and thus can’t inform their Big Boss.

The pro-Kremlin group Trade Union of Russian Citizens wants the Material Girl in court for blasphemy and for damaging the cultural foundations of St. Petersburg. Nine activists filed a suit against the pop star after her concert on August 9.

All the fuss is because of Madonna’s actions on the stage. The pop diva started her show asking fans to raise their hands with pink bracelets, which they were given on the entrance, in support of homosexual rights.

It is, however, illegal to promote homosexuality in St. Petersburg. The local law, which bans so-called “propaganda of sodomy, lesbianism, bisexualism and transgenderism, and pedophilia to minors,” was passed in March this year.

Union spokesperson Darya Dedova griped that Madonna "insulted believers’ feelings, she promoted homosexuality when there were children at the concert and this is forbidden in St. Petersburg. We, the residents of the cultural capital, suffered a colossal moral damage."

And apparently you can put a price on so-called moral damage: the Union is asking for $10 million.

  1. Oh those poor "believers" had their delicate homophobic feelings hurt. The only thing that will assuage their pain is lots of money.

  2. "Colossal moral damage" my ass. THAT damage is to the gay people of Russia, and the world which St. Petersburg has inflicted. Madonna should hold a laughing rally in New York while she tears up the kangaroo summons she's received. Real publicity, mocking, in-the-street publicity, would be joyously appropropriate and very heartening to the gay people of Russia. Don't say Madonna is not our friend.

  3. I've got a news-flash for those Russians... you folks were "colossally morally damaged" long before Madonna came to town.

Maybe it coincided with when you passed such an idiotic law.

  4. Russia will always be socially backwards.
    Primitive. Just primitive.

  5. hilarious. even in russia the bigots take the same stance.

"your existence offends me! your refusal to be scared of my hatred of you makes ME the victim!"

    oh bugger off.

kudos to Madonna for doing the show, for speaking out, and for being a beacon of hope for those who attended the show.

you'd think some of these countries would learn from their own not-so-distant pasts, eh? but heck, even here in apparently-enlightened North America we have folks who don't seem to realize that, y'know, there are no "acceptable" forms of bigoted discrimination.

some folks are determined to ignore the past.

  6. Goodbye, Russia. I agree with you, you will never get over the devastation done to you by this Joan of Arc.

  7. I'm not sure what the Russian legal system is like, what exactly Madonna said, or what the exact translation of the law is she supposedly broke. However, a clear difference would seem to exist between supporting homosexual rights and supporting sodomy and lesbianism. She never said "be a lesbian! be a sodomite!" And, since the local law does not reflect a national or other higher government law, one could argue that the issue of gay rights in Russia is hardly settled. I'm also curious how "moral damages" work in Russian law. Apart from the amount seeming totally arbitrary, I can't discern how the money would make the plaintiffs whole. I'm guessing Madonna's lawyers will destroy the plaintiffs' arguments in this case.

  8. @Stefan: I have read that the laws have been called vague - to put it mildly. It wouldn't surprise me if the law would convict someone who even mentioned "homosexual", let alone "gay". Remember also that gay pride has been banned in Moscow for 100 years.

  9. from a russian friend: apparently even wearing a rainbow bracelet "counts" as homosexual propaganda.

don't look for logic or consistency in these bigoted laws. they exist only by ignoring logic and consistency.

  10. Hey! This is the first post I've read about M where someone else wasn't mentioned, and she wasn't called any number of nasty things. Kudos Towleroad commenters for taking the high road! Lol... Seriously, I hope Madonna slays this law and fights the crap out of this weakass lawsuit.

Joan of Arc? Love it, but she came to a bad end. How about Liberty as she leads the revolutioners against the tyrants holding a (French) rainbow flag? Props if you know which painting I'm referring to ;)

  11. maybe the parents that let their children go to a show that's clearly identified as for adults should be held responsible if they heard something a parent shouldn't?

Would be nice if she made a public statement telling them to eat it. Russia isn't going to have population problems from homosexuality (like they claim), it will be because the country sucks and a very high proportion of their population drinks themselves pickled.

And this is the group of individuals suing her for moral suffering or whatever, she also got slapped with a fine by the city because of her "promotion of homosexuality"

  12. Madonna needs to shut her old crusty mouth and let Gaga speak up for the gays. Gaga is a true gay activist who ended bullying, ended Don't Ask Don't Tell, and is seen by most world leaders as the true representative for gay people all over the world. Express Yourself my ass!

Posted by: CLAWS UP | Oct 18, 2012 3:59:15 PM

  13. Gaga ended bullying? Oh wow... Awesome... Glad that's not a problem anymore... Whew... Thanks! Lol... For reals? You actually think no one's getting bullied any more? Damn, you are really uninformed, my friend.

  14. Claws Up is obviously a parody blog/poster with way too much time on his or her hands, laughing their ass off at serious replies to that kind of post. I get that a lot of the Gaga fan base is... not super informed... but I seriously doubt anyone would articulate those sentiments in a way that calls attention to that.

  15. Oh shut up JD, or else all the little monsters and I will hunt you down, kill you, and throw your body in a feces infested river.

Posted by: CLAWS UP | Oct 18, 2012 10:05:41 PM

  16. Um... Towleroad? Can you please ban this Claws Up dude since he's threatening other posters? Thanks.

    Posted by: graphicjack | Oct 19, 2012 7:01:22 AM

  17. Ha. Again, I don't think it's a serious threat. It's a joke. But, yes, as "the target," I agree that it's just stupid trolling and would like to see it banned.
