Honey Boo Boo Child and Her Uncle Poodle Speak Out Against Bullying on GLAAD's Spirit Day: VIDEO

Alana Thompson, aka Honey Boo Boo child and perhaps the youngest advocate for gay people on reality TV, released a statement in support of GLAAD's anti-bullying Spirit Day today, and her gay uncle Lee Thompson (aka Uncle Poodle because Alana calls all gay people "poodles") released a video talking about being bullied in the South.

HoneyboobooWrites Honey Boo Boo on Facebook:

  1. amen, MaddM@!

there's a beautiful point that is being lost on many - this family, that is being mocked across the globe, are advanced enough to love their uncle. and put a face to that love.

no hiding. no shame. love love love.

    so what's the issue?

i have two nieces, 4 year old twins, that call me Uncle Rainbow. I think it's freakin' adorable.

  2. Poodles are considered one of the world's smartest breeds of dogs. Also, Karen Walker used to call Jack McFarland "Poodle" on Will & Grace back in the 90's. She used it as a term of endearment on the show and I've never known it to be used any other way. Honey Boo Boo is super smart for knowing what was on TV 10 years before she was born.

  3. I think he's kinda cute. It's really cool to have a family that should be "from the enemy side" totally accepting us.

  5. God Bless this youngster for taking a stand for gays in the south where they are still fighting the Civil War and oppressing anybody who does not fit their kind of crazy.

  9. I was moved by his words. Good for him and shame on anyone who would tear him down for having the courage to record this message.

I would, however, point out that "the South" is not a monolithic concept except to people on the outside. It's very different whether you're talking about the cities or the rural areas. (This is true of anywhere in America, it's just that the South is predominately rural.) Cities like Atlanta, New Orleans, and Nashville are progressive and tolerant, and gay people are visible and welcomed there.

Please now don't trot out your anecdotes to contradict this. Homophobia exists everywhere.
