Mets Pitcher Syndergaard Tweets Anti-Gay Slur: 'Nice Crocs Fag Lol'

Newly-acquired New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard tweeted and then deleted an anti-gay slur, the New York Daily News reports:

SynergaardRighthanded pitcher Noah Syndergaard, 20, acquired along with catcher Travis d'Arnaud in the deal that sent the Cy Young Award winner to the Blue Jays, tweets from the account @Noahsyndergaard.

On Dec. 9, this tweet appeared from that account: "@DMarze89 nice crocs f-- lol"

The tweet no longer appears on the timeline for the account.

A Mets spokesman said that the team was looking into the matter. The full context of the tweet was not immediately clear; Syndergaard might be available on a conference call introducing him and d'Arnaud on Tuesday.

In September, Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar received a three-game suspension with lost salary going to GLAAD and anti-homophobia sports group You Can Play for playing with the anti-gay slur "Maricon" painted in his eye black. Escobar was also instructed to undergo sensitivity training.

Syndergaard was acquired from the Blue Jays.

  1. It's what he learned from the coaches back in high school.

  4. my guess is that someone gave him the heads up that that kind of tweet could be costly, hence its disappearance...

  5. Idiot. You'd think they would have figured out by now that they can't away with that stuff anymore. The slur doesn't surprise me, the utter stupidity does.

  6. Caliban - I was thinking the same thing, wondering what the mental capacity of these guys must be if they are continuously oblivious to the repercussions that these other dim-witted athletes engender over and over again.

  7. No, they don't ever learn. Well, the non-bigoted ones do, but those that have that in their mindset, won't ever truly learn. They'll stop using these slurs because they'll be intimidated by the fact they lose money and fan support. But the issue of homophobia in sports/with sports fans is still as much of an issue as it's ever been. When you are born and raised in a culture where hate speech is the norm and accepted as OK, it comes as no surprise these athletes lack the sense not to make fools of themselves, over and over.

  8. Sorry, but those lips have been around more man meat than anything else. Projection much?

  9. Apparently guys like this are too stupid to keep up with the news that language like this is not cool for a professional sports figure. Another idiot rides the bus!

  10. If for nothing else, this is stupid because no decent gay would be caught dead in shoes that look like rubber turds.

  11. what is ignorant to me, is to think that there will be some kind of ideology-change that will somehow alter that mindset. we need to stop holding our 'athletes' to the same kind of inclusion that we expect from our politicians!

athletes are not known for their inclusion, or, for that matter, their inherent intelligence!

they should be held to the status that they've always been. they are just buff sexual objects, like supermodels, and they should never be allowed to speak. we don't like them for their ability to speak...which most of them don't have

we just want to see them with their shirts off.

please, shut up, you are ruining the fantasy that you have something to say that's relevant. please keep quiet. and take off your shirt. that's truly all you have to offer.

and by the way, i'll never look at the posts with your shirt off...i don't know what i would do with all the vomit.

  12. One more reason why it is important to come out, and to promote a safe atmosphere for young queer people.

It seems naive to expect a young jock to suddenly acquire social consciousness and stop using the f word on his own, just because he was chosen by the Mets. The word should have been unacceptable in his Junior High.

Now -- this fool needs to do public service announcements telling people that he has learned how much damage the word can do

  13. Jesus...he's 20 effing years old and would probably be a construction laborer or landscaper in some small town if it wasn't for the fact he's managed to become a professional baseball player. The kid is probably far from being the most worldly, experienced and sophisticated guy.

And in what context was a comment made? I'm just curious, not defending his use of a gay slur.

  16. Twitter unforunately Is a pastime for far too many
There's a reason some of us have been taught and learn "think before you speak"...it seems too many idiots that don't do just that are offered the opportunity to post what they are thinking when they think it. That's really only a chance a very select few should be offered.
I for one would not have a great deal to say.
I'm always very aware of what I say and very aware what I say can very easily come back to bite me in the ass.

  20. OKAY WHAT DID HE SAY? DID HE SAY FAG OR DID HE JUST WRITE F**? INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW. ANYWAY, I DON'T THINK IT'S ANY BIG DEAL. LORD KNOWS I'VE BEEN CALLED WORSE. YOU LEARN TO DEVELOP A THICK SKIN (SOMETHING AKIN TO A RHINOCEROS) OVER A PERIOD OF TIME WHEN YOU'RE A LOVELY LITTLE QUEEN LIKE ME. MERRY CHRISTMAS!
