Over 250 Religious Leaders Back Marriage Equality In Illinois

IllinoisAs Illinois lawmakers and activists pull their resources and build support to pass marriage equality there early next month, over 250 religious leaders are coming together to lend their pro-equality voices too.

From the Chicago Tribune:

On Sunday, rabbis and pastors from denominations that support gay rights in varying degrees unveiled a declaration supporting equality for same-sex couples. Fostering faith, justice and compassion is a key component of their jobs, they said.

"Standing on these beliefs, we think that it is morally just to grant equal opportunities and responsibilities to loving, committed same-sex couples.," the declaration stated. "There can be no justification for the law treating people differently on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity."

Democratic lawmakers, led in the State Senate by Sen. Heather Steans and in the House by Rep. Greg Harris, hope to pass a bill before the new session is sworn in on January 9. Gov. Pat Quinn said he would gladly sign such a bill into law.

  2. There should be a public debate between these pastors and representatives of the Catholic Church.
    Why they have such a different interpretation of the same book?

  3. Even if what he said is true about New York's gun laws. Adam Lanza, James Holmes etc are not the friends of mayers and just "ordinary people", they will not be able to get a gun. What is he complaining about?

  4. I'm glad this declaration was issued. It always helps the fight.

    @Simon: Yes, I'm oversimplifying.

    Different interpretations are somewhat a natural consequence of different denominations. Part of the issue is how literally to take the Bible; how to translate Biblical Hebrew, Biblical Aramaic, and Hellinistic Greek; how much scholarship (especially science) is allowed to influence interpretation.

    The Religious Right takes the Bible literally, does not believe in recent research in Biblical languages, and excludes most scholarship (especially science). They generally worship the KJB and will not countenance any deviation from their denomination's traditional interpretation of the 18th century revision of the original 1611. It pretends, however, not to have any interpretive tradition.

    RC is more liberal than the Religious Right on all items above, plus it recognizes a normative "continuous" tradition of interpretation since the beginning.

    The liberal Christians do not interpret the Bible literally, apply recent research in Biblical languages, and take recent scholarship in all fields seriously. How much of an interpretive history is recognized depends on the denomination - in all cases it is not normative.

    As you can see, none of the three groups agree enough for a reasonable discussion.

  5. Democrats own Illinois government and have huge majorities in the General Assembly. Conservative Democrats will determine whether marriage equality is enacted. There will be no blaming it on Republicans and the religious right.

  6. Jesus would be for this...enough said. Jesus is about love, not rejection nor hate. Remember this, the message gets lost with all these idiots, but remember that Jesus is about love. That's all! If it's love, Jesus is for it...that's what we have here...love. It doesn't matter to Jesus whether it is two men or two women, all that matters is the love that is there between those two. It is the business of those two, and no one else. Let them love in peace...that is what Jesus would want.

  7. The 250 religious leaders who back marriage equality are nothing more than biblical enablers. They continue to quote the warm & fuzzy passages in the bible while remaining silent on the horrors the tribal god of the Israelites , Yahweh is guilty of: killing all the little children of the world in Noah's flood. Killing all the little children of Sodom for their fathers "sins", killing the child of David & Bathsheba to punish them for their tryst. Killing all the people, even the little children in the cities that the Israelites conquered. Killing 70,000 people because he was angry that David took a census. Killing the man caught gathering wood on the Sabbath. Killing the man who touched the Ark of the Covenant who was trying to steady it so it wouldn't fall to the ground. The list goes on. The violent god Yahweh of the ancient Israelites has been spun into "our heavenly father" nothing could be farther from the truth.
