Marriage Equality Bills Introduced in Hawaii

Marriage equality legislation was introduced in Hawaii's House and Senate this morning, HRC reports:

HawaiiIf successful, Hawaii would be the 10th state in the union to allow the marriage for all couples, regardless of whom they love.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Baehr v. Lewin, the Hawaii State Supreme Court opinion that sparked our nation's marriage equality movement. In the opinion, Justice Steven Levinson said, “No person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law, nor be denied the equal protection of the laws, nor be denied the enjoyment of the person's civil rights or be discriminated against in the exercise thereof because of race, religion, sex or ancestry.”

Although this opinion opened the door to same-sex marriage in the Aloha State and across the country, voters amended the constitution five years later, giving the legislature the ability to interpret what constitutes a legal marriage in the state.

  1. Lets go hawaii! I can't wait till my home state passes marriage equality. It was the first to ban gay marriage, don't be the last to allow it!

  2. If they want to be the tenth, they'd better pass it fast. Otherwise, it looks like Rhode Island will be tenth with Hawaii eleventh. And I could live with that.

  4. Justice Steven Levinson is a gem - he led the way for the rest of the country and world and I will never for get what he did for LGBT people worldwide.

Former Governor Linda Lingle (R) invited him to the press conference where she vetoed the civil union bill. So glad she's gone, and she lost her race for the Senate...

Our present governor Neil Abercrombie's first act as governor was to push the civil unions bill through and we finally got it passed and it became effective Jan 1, 2012.

Civil unions are NOT the same as marriage. We want marriage equality and we're gonna get it! =]

  7. We endorse Marriage Equality and are truly happy some Representatives were able to move beyond the religious intolerance and hate. They put thousands on the streets to stand in the way of Equality and in the end Love prevailed. Proud day for us in Hawaii Love is Love!
