Alaska Republicans Literally Laugh At Idea Of Civil Unions: VIDEO

AlaskaHouse

Alaska's Republican-led House Majority Caucus really gave had themselves a good laugh on Friday, when Mark Miller from the Juneau Empire asked if their upcoming initiatives include civil unions or domestic partnerships to same-sex couples.

No, House Leader Lance Pruitt said after overcoming his giggles, of course they have no such plans. Civil unions are an issue Pruitt and company wouldn't deign discuss, and it's laughable to even suggest they would debate things that "happen in people's bedrooms."

Isn't that funny? The people leading a state don't care about equality because they think being gay is just about sex? What a riot!! I'm slapping my knee!

Watch the video, via Alaska Commons, AFTER THE JUMP. It's disgusting, but thankfully it's also short.

  1. And I believe in President Obama's strategy for LGBT equality. It's worked pretty damn well so far.

  2. If the equality argument does win at the Supreme Court and Prop 8 and DOMA are overturned, you can bet your buttons that before sundown that day the calls for a Federal Constitutional Amendment banning all recognition of gay unions will begin. If the decisions are released in the morning, the calls for will begin before lunch.

  3. Considering that these are the leaders who represent the people who elected Sarah Palin as their Governor, I think THEY are the ones who should be laughed at. No worries. It will come, by and by.

  4. Notice how their whole ideology revolves around "making money." That's freedom for them--the freedom of laissez-faire (environmental laws or worker safety/protection be damned), and nothing else matters. Mind you, domestic partnerships, or civil unions, or marriage all affect how you are taxed on your money, how much you can leave your partner, health benefits, survivorship, child custody, and a host of other issues. But for these guys, none of that matters--"freedom" for the Republicans means the freedom to make pots and pots of cash. It's a 2-dimensional view of the world.

  6. Those guys were laughing as if domestic partnerships or civil unions were the most absurd thing ever. What they didn't realize is that domestic partnerships are already recognized by many Alaskan cities and towns such as Anchorage, Sitka, Wasilla, Palmer, and yes, even Juneau.

  8. If we don't know by now what Republicans stand for then we deserve the Stupid Award.

The GOProuds are lacking all self respect and must be stripped of their entitlement to be called members of the gay community.

These clowns in Alaska supported Palin in "The Rise and Fall of the House of Palin".....and they are the best and brightest of the Republican Party......laughing gnomes in their snow garden.

  9. LOL at the person who said this was the true, unabashed face of the GOP. More like the true, unabashed face of 48% of the USA.

  11. I agree with Capetom. I want this to go viral, go national. Especially given this is about civil unions and not that magical word "marriage" that a lot of people still have issue with. This is going to be very much cut and dry hate with most people, and hateful these bigots sure are. I'm sure Alaskan gays already know what they're up against, as does the gay community in any conservative state, and really, with the majority of politicians in general.

Politicians are not our friends unless they prove it over time; something to remember going forward. We need to be done groveling to politicians. Instead, support the ones who are solidly pro-gay, either in office or prospective pro-gay politicians, and expose the anti-gay bigots and run them out of office.

  13. Thank you for correcting me regarding Alsaka, for obviously, I did fall asleep often during history. Will have to brush up on all things Alaska pronto!

That being said, and snark aside, how can anyone who has read or listened to the news in the past 18 months think that GOP goes with Proud. What are they proud of exactly? The butchering of all things American in the name of a man-made deity is nothing to be august about. Especially when the actions of most representatives of that party are very much in opposition of said deity's teachings.

  14. The National Democratic Party needs to collect as many of these incidents as possible. And broadcast them prior to the 2014 elections.

  16. @JAMESINLA

There's only two options, either they overturn Prop 8 or they don't. If they overturn Prop 8, they can't apply it to just California. The question before the Court is whether the US Constitutions 14th Amendment guarantees a Right to marry for Gay and Lesbian Americans. If they rule it does, then that will bring down all bans nationwide.

Ten years ago the Court ruled a Constitutional Right to homosexual sex. Ten years is plenty of time to evolve and apply the same ruling to Marriage. Not to mention, Justice Kennedy would love to be remembered as the Justice that ended the last Civil Rights struggle of our Great Country.

  17. Make all the angry comments you want, but this is the reality we're up against. And is gay is not about sex? What is it?

  18. This is live beyond the "Blog" It's called "Reality TV"

  19. Revolting.

  20. There are more than 2 options with Prop 8, @ThomasAlex; there could be a broad ruling but there could also be a narrow ruling. And the DOMA case only deals with Section 3 which is about gay couples who are already married. Not that positive decisions wouldn't speed up the trajectory towards full federal marriage equality, but there's no guarantee or even the expectation they'd bring equality to all 50 states in June. That said, @Josh, the reality the Alaskan gigglers are up against is that they're on the wrong side of history and they're dinosaurs. So the last laugh will be on them. And, no, relationship equality has little to do with sex, as anyone in a longterm relationship can tell you.

  21. The best thing you can do is refuse to visit that backwards state so that they lose out on tourism dollars. If they're going to treat gays like crap, then they don't deserve our money.

    Posted by: Pigs | Feb 17, 2013 6:52:56 PM

  22. @Josh: How many hours a week do you spend having sex? What do you do with the rest of your time?

You're still gay when apply for a job. You're still gay when you lease an apartment. You're still gay when you file your taxes, or for insurance benefits, or when you sit thru probate court. These brain trusts want to complicate, if not flat out deny you, your participation in all of those things that affect your real life as a person - aspects of life that are common to every person regardless of whom we do or do not have sex with - because of the small fraction of our lives we spend sharing a bed with a person of our same gender.

    Get it, now?

  23. FFS: It takes a lot to make a Republican laugh. I'm sure your laundry list wasn't at the top of their minds. Anal sex can be a real gut buster to some. Remember, you're only as "gay" as you reveal yourself to be. If you have gay sex you are gay, no matter how little "hours" you do it. These things you mention have never been a problem for me. Got it? Enjoy being gay. The least you can do is have more sex.

  24. Spoken like a true coward. Have fun with that.

  25. I am reminded of the history of other civil rights struggles and the absence of the tawdry record behind some of the failures to act or the reasons for acting in a certain way by those who opposed the extension of civil rights to others in our society. We can be thankful that videos such as this create a PUBLIC RECORD of the scorn and disrespect Republicans have in Alaska toward other citizens in their state. These kinds of video tapes will be helpful in highlighting that the Alaska GOP is a party that fosters bigotry and contempt for many of its citizens just like the GOP AND Democrats did in the US many years ago. Today, though it is white people mostly in the GOP, let's remember that it took some courageous GLBT people to push Democrats to embrace full GLBT equality. It was not in the DNA of Democrats to do it prior to that time. So, I wonder, what critical mass within the Alaska GOP will emerge to achieve this belated equal rights goal just as it took Democrats far too long to provide the courageous leadership on this issue? I may be disgusted with the GOP, but it is tempered slightly that I cannot be hypocritical by forgetting that we Democrats don't have an unblemished history either. Keep the cameras rolling on these kinds of public displays of hate and bigotry!!!
