Subway France Shuts Down Franchise Owner’s Anti-Gay Special

Subway

The owner of a Subway franchise in Angers, France, thought he would pull a Dan Cathy by using his fast food signage to discriminate against gay people.

On Valentine's Day, the owner posted a sign advertising a "feast of love for couples (M/F);" then, at the bottom of the poster, he included the self-defense, "Discrimination: No, the marriage for all law has advanced, but has yet to be ratified by the Senate. Until then, I'll use my freedom of expression."

Naturally, this being the 21st Century, the hateful message was soon spread across Twitter and Facebook, prompting executives at Subway France to temporarily close that store's location and release an apology.

From their Facebook page:

The SUBWAY brand is strongly committed to maintaining the values of diversity and inclusiveness in its restaurants around the world and does not endorse in any discrimination of any kind.

We apologize to all those people who felt offended by the individual promotional initiative for Valentine's Day of a restaurant in Angers, France.

Subway officials called the owner a "marginal case" and are looking into filing sanctions against him.

Separation of Church and State (in France it is more clearly drawn as state secularism): want to discriminate, ply your trade in your local non-inclusive Church basement.

Want to ply your trade for the rest of the civilized, law-abiding country, suck-it up and sell to all, no matter their sexual orientation.

As are all these bigots, his disclaimer is bogus and a lie anyway. He denies gay couples participation because they can’t legally marry but he wasn’t offering his special to MARRIED couples; he was offering it to COUPLES.

Bigots are always liars! Why can’t they just be proud of their bigotry and stand by it, being honest about their motives?

Zeke, they can’t be proud of their bigotry becuase they would have to admit to being biots. That just takes all of the righteousness out of self-righteous.

This wrong was righted because 1) people called attention to the bigotry instead of letting it slide, and 2) the bigotry was spread widely via social media. Praise activism that gets corporate attention.

    @ David Lauri,

The average French person loves American fast food. Funny, a friend had a French teenage boy staying with his family for one month here in America and he couldn’t get enough junk food. The last thing he did while going to the airport was pick u a box of donuts.

I’m always kind of amazed by the fact there are more fast food places in European cities than in my home, Boston. And they do very well.

The guy wasn’t breaking any French law and he wouldn’t be arrested or charged with a ‘hate’ crime. What happened is Subway in France objected. The same thing happens here; many corporations will object to employee or franchise owner behavior.

France has separation of church and state, but Catholicism is till the de facto religion of France and it plays even today an important cultural role.
