Bill O'Reilly Attacks Columnist Who Called Him Out for Homophobic Ambush of Gay Colorado House Speaker: VIDEO

Last week, I posted about some ugly trolling by The O'Reilly Factor of openly gay Colorado House Speaker Mark Ferrandino. O'Reilly's Jesse Watters ambushed Ferrandino and questioned his opposition to "Jessica’s Law", which imposes excessive mandatory sentences for first-time offenders of child molesters, yet the segment seemed to link Ferrandino's sexuality and support for gay marriage to his lack of opposition to such predators.

Denver Post columnist Curtis Hubbard called him on it, and O'Reilly had him on the show last night.

"You've got a nerve calling me a homophobe," O'Reilly ranted, before accusing Hubbard of being a "disgraceful...smear merchant" and a "charlatan".

  1. actually, O'Reilly, you continually play up anti-gay rhetoric and fears on your program. so, yeah.

  2. "which imposes excessive mandatory sentences for first-time offenders of child molesters"

I'm pretty sure that's not quite the wording that you wanted to use.

  3. Bill O'Reilly calling someone a "smear merchant" is like Chris Christie calling someone a "big fatty."

  4. The columnist came off looking calm and reasoned, and O'Reilly was his usual unhinged, yelling, abusive, name-calling, bullying self. I guess that's red meat for O'Reilly fans, but I'll never understand why people agree to be on his show, when they know they're going to be talked over and abused.

  5. Yeah, right, O'Reilly. You made a choice about what to report, and linked them in a report. Don't be so ingenuous.

  6. Why did he even bother to go on O'Reilly's show? He knew that O'Reilly would attack him viciously. This is, however, a wonderful example of O'Reilly's skill as a debater. He managed to turn this into a debate about the proposed law, not his comments. You can be sure that he will also retaliate against the writer's ill-advised use of "no one." O'Reilly will find
    someone/anyone who supports the bill.

  7. O'Reilly is not skilled as a debater. He's skilled at bullying people from the comfort of his own show for an unthinking audience. He's incapable of rational thought, which is why he always resorts to shouting insults.

He's also simply lying here (surprise). His show used the exact same tactic in 2007 in VT when his team was sent to ambush one of our gay legislators (which didn't go over well in VT--they were chased out of the State House) over Jessica's law. The tactic is to go after the gay legislator, identify him as gay, hope the unthinking audience connects that to child molestation, then accuse the gay legislator of caring more about the GAY issue (or in the VT case, trans issue) than the welfare of children. The merit's of Jessica's law in comparison to what states already have in place isn't even on the radar screen because they don't care about it; they care about taking down a gay person in the most cowardly way possible.

  8. Ernie, you should email Curtis Hubbard and tell him about what happened with O'Reilly and the VT case. He should include that if he writes a follow-up column.

  9. Bill O'Reilly lies right to the face of his gullible viewers. Every time he refers to his show as the "No Spin Zone" even those people should LOL.

What is political punditry other than "spin"

  10. "disgraceful...smear merchant" and a "charlatan".

Psychological projection on Bills part. He's describing himself. Wingnuts do that alot i find. Utterly incapable of self reflection.

  11. One of the reasons I miss Keith O. He went after Billo unmercifully, so much until Fox wanted to call a truce. Remember, his segment, "If you're ever ambushed by an O'Reilly flunkey".

  12. The difference between what passes for discussion on American television and British television says a lot...none of it good about the American populace. the fact that a screaming lunatic like O'Reilly is taken seriously enough to be given a primetime show speaks volumes about the peons who watch his network.

  13. You people are idiots. O'Reilly tore this guy a new one.

Even if you hate Fox news, and Bill, he was right to be outraged and blasted this guy point for point.

even a broken clock is right twice a day, and this was one for O'Reilly.

that Hubbard guy should be ashamed of himself.

  14. You know, I didn't see this but saw Monday's show where regular guest Bernard Goldberg was on and Bernard made the same exact argument against O'Reilly to his face and wasn't treated like that. The same exact argument.

  15. O'Reilly is a demagogue who wouldn't be on TV in a civilized country

  16. Most homophobes deny being homophobic. O'Reilly is no exception.

  17. Disgraceful, a smear merchant and a charlatan.

I'd say that just about sums you up nicely, Mr. O'Reilly.

  18. O'Reilly is a masturbater, not a master debater. He doesn't use facts, reasoning, or logic to convey his point - Bill just "wins" by virtue of screaming loudly until either he drowns out his opponent or they quit out of sheer frustration.

  19. Bill O'Reilly calling someone a "smear merchant" is like Chris Christie calling someone a "big fatty."

    GOOD ONE!!!!!

Bill O'Reilly calling someone a "smear merchant" is like Chris Christie calling someone else and Over-eater"

  20. @Matt, you didn't explain why Hubbard should be ashamed of himself? His column told the truth. O'Reilly uses Jessica's law ambushes to gay-bait legislators. If you think that's ripping a new one, you're as gullible as O'Reilly's mindless groupies.

  21. It amazes me how many people follow "talking heads" on TV...(and to be fair, both liberals and conservatives to an extent) without thinking for themselves. Rush Limbaugh calls his radio listeners "ditto heads" for a reason.

  22. Bill O"Reilly should go back to "Inside Edition" where he did some serious media journalism, at least as compared to what he and others do on Fox.

    Posted by: andrew | Mar 14, 2013 5:32:25 PM

  23. @ Ernie. I agree he is a bully, but my point is that he skillfully changed the topic and put the guy on the defensive. That he did it with bullying, shouting, and lies doesn't matter to his audience.

And, of course, O'Reilly was making a homophobic comment.
The legislator's sexuality has nothing to do with his position on Jessica's Law. It's irrelevant and only included to incite his viewers.

  24. Oh poor Bill O'Reilly he is been attacked so badly. Let's have a bit of pity toward poor little Bill. He gets pissy when people call him out. Seems like that is his style.

  25. I forgot to say. Bill O'Reilly is a lying sac of crap.
