Westfield Mall Official Apologies at Rally for Gay Men Kicked Out for Kissing: VIDEO

Kaplan

At a rally on Saturday at Roseville, California's Westfield Mall protesting the ejection of a gay couple (below) for kissing, Keith Kaplan, the VP of development at Westfield, apologized for the incident:

"I am here today to unequivocally state that everyone is welcome here at Westfield and we sincerely apologize by any actions taken by any of us that made anyone feel otherwise...I am particularly proud to represent our company at this event. I live in Hollywood with my partner Mike for over 20 years..."

Roseville Patch reported on the event: Roseville

Speakers included Beverly Kearney, who originated the event, and David Larson, a former Roseville City Council candidate and founding president of Sacramento's Rainbow Coalition. Keith Kaplan, the mall’s vice president for development, also addressed the crowd.

Kearney, said she wants everyone to feel welcome in public places. “It is time for a revolution,” she said. “We cannot accept discrimination anymore.”

Larson, called for a future where gay couples can openly show general affection in Roseville. “What is important 'today' is the history we are making 'today' in Roseville,” Larson said. “And what is important is how we make that history.”

Attendees like Dan McGhan, who kissed his partner a few times during the event, came to show support for Chesmore and Guzman. The couple were not seen attending.

“I’m not (usually) a big supporter of public displays of affection, but if someone does a little bit I don’t think they should be kicked out of a mall,” said McGhan, 49 of Sacramento. “More and more people are showing affection and we don’t want them to go through this.”

Galleria officials laid out a virtual red carpet for the event-goers providing amenities with servers offering attendees complimentary bottled waters, Mrs. Fields cookies and hot chocolate. They also commissioned an arched-entryway made of rainbow-colored balloons.

  1. Maybe the guard threw them out because they're not handsome or sexy. Unsexy people smooching is gross.

  2. 1. Did they apologize directly to Chesman and Guzman??

    2. What actions are being taken at Westfield so that this doesn't happen again?! What of the offending security guard?

Why aren't these details being reported?!'

  5. Steps:
    1) Apologize
    2) Backtrack on apology and claim victims were lewd (without proof)
    3) Find highest-ranking gay in your company to mouth an apology at a rally without directly apologizing to the victims or mentioning a solution.

  6. Where is the mall manager, and why wasn't he the one issuing the apology?

  8. Keep the pressure on this mall. Because yeah, the window dressing is nice. But Daniel Chesmore was not happy and stated as much on Westfield's FB page on Saturday, when Westfield publicly backtracked although they never directly apologized to him. Westfield is trying to win the PR game and they cannot get away with their behavior.

  9. If the company that owns Westfield Mall is so gay friendly, and if this VP is gay himself, why wasn't he at all outraged and offended at the ejection of these guys? That was what was missing for me. It was too much "Thanks for coming to our *wonderful, accepting of all people, mall*, and not enough, "I share your outrage and we need to make sure this stops happening everywhere".

  12. Nice PR damage control stunt by the mall, but I don't buy it, I don't buy it at all.
They "apologize" (the classic "we're sorry if you're offended" apology) while at the same time smearing Jose Guzman and Daniel Chesmore on their facebook site, claiming that they were kicked out for "sexually explicit conduct". I really hope that the two will sue their pants off.
And please keep the pressure on this mall until (among other things) they issue a public apology to Jose Guzman and Daniel Chesmore.

  13. The mall isn't going to turn it's back on the gay dollar.

  14. I can see the planning meeting:

We'll fly a gay up her to talk to them. Let's get some balloons. Rainbow balloons. Queers, I mean gays love rainbows and balloons. And hot chocolate and cookies and water. We'll have our PR gay say a bunch non-specific things that sorta look like an apology but doesn't admit anything. The lawyers said don't admit anything or agree to any specific thing. We also can't ACTUALLY apologize for publicly saying the gay boys were having public sex. So leave that out. Let's turn this protest into a celebration. Gays love a party. Let's pull some their protestors aside and promise to work with them on something non-specific at some unknown future time.

    Works every time. "
