1NewsIcon A rehabilitated Brett Ratner, the director who stepped down from the 2012 Oscars and underwent sensitivity training after using the word "fag" during a Q&A in his movie Tower Heist, received the Ally Award at the same event last night. From his speech, "Homophobe. Bigot. Gay-basher. Ignorant frat boy. Fat, Jewish pig. I was called all of these names when I foolishly used a gay slur in a misguided attempt to be funny during an interview. Do I believe what I was called to be true? Aside from the Jewish and fat part? No, absolutely not. But I learned a valuable lesson: a word can matter, whether it's said with malice or a joke."

The change was motivated, he said, by his son having come out to him and his wife as a homosexual. Well, it's a good thing his son didn't announce that he was involved in bestiality. 1. Brett Ratner gets an Ally Award for what, exactly? He's known as being a jerk who regularly says misogynistic and homophobic stuff, who goes too far once and gets backlash, and then--motivated solely by a need for positive PR--does a handful of PSAs and a fundraiser for Christine Quinn.

Are we so desirous of celebrity bedfellows that we call this an ally? A man who only did what he did (and only for a year) because we're a cause to him, not because we're probably any more people than we were before. And if he was "never a homophobe" as one of GLAAD's people said, then all the worse that he used a gay slur. There are many, many less famous people who have been allies from the beginning, who never had anything to gain, who never got any award much less a word written about them. Those are our allies, and I think most of us know the difference well.

Once again, whatever GLAAD is selling, I'm not buying.

  2. Another named Brett Ratner has now been called? Bruce.

  3. The cruise ship industry is scandalous. If people realized how vulnerable they are as passengers on the high seas, this industry would tank overnight. Most people I think believe they're legally protected same as on U.S. territory, and they aren't. To add insult to injury they avoid rigorous safety standards by registering off shore, not to mention paying taxes for all those rescue missions and CG activity.

  4. The Ratner Experiment seems to have worked. Did they apply "The Clockwork Orange" techniques this time, or the battery cables to the testicles?

  5. The Cruise ship situation is easily solved. Bill them for the Coast Guard's help and if they don't pay, siege the ships. Personally I'm a little fed up with big companies not paying for the services they use.

  6. Is there an organization for straights like Gladd?

  7. The comments following the "vitriol" blog are eye-opening and enlightening. For a better understanding of the bigotry so rife in the country, take a look.

  8. Yes it is rife. Sorry that you are so oppressed and threatened, which you haven't experienced a day in your precious life.

  9. Rem: My point being. Tell me about a day that you were oppressed. Let's hear about the bigotry too. Anything like those black men hanging from trees that Madonna mentioned. Who's version of oppression are you adopting?

  10. Why is it still ok to use the f word on this blog?

  11. I've known Brett Ratner's mother for nearly 20 years (though I've never met him) and I gotta say she's one of the loveliest gay-friendly straight people I've ever known. So I'm unclear where all this would come from. Brett used a certain rhetorical device sloppily and got in hot water for it--and that's to the good. But I can tell you this: if he's truly homophobic, he definitely didn't learn it in his family of origin.

  12. GLAAD are making themselves looking like a laughing stock by rewarding losers like Brett Ratner.

He was caught, engaging in hatespeech, was caught and went to 'sensitivity training'.

And he gets an award for that.

    Truly pathetic.

  17. With Hillary’s support, then sex outside of marriage is probably okay too. Bill and Monica proved that.
It’s politics. Obviously taking a back seat to selfishness and biology. This was a concerted effort by gays to manufacture their oppression. Prior to this, gays had a strong and liberated identity–with no desire to replicate the “straight” model. It’s sad what has happened — but get ready for a mess. It won’t be pretty..
