In New Report, Church of England Recommends Blessings for Gay Couples in Civil Partnerships

A new report released yesterday from the Church of England recommended gay couples in civil partnerships be able to receive blessings, the Telegraph reports:

CocksworthThe senior bishop who drafted the missive to priests insisted that it did not amount to a policy u-turn and that an official ban on formal "blessings" for civil partnerships remained in place. But he said it was clear there was a need for committed same-sex couples to be given recognition and “compassionate attention” from the Church, including special prayers.

The paper adds:

The report by the Church’s Faith and Order Commission, chaired by the Bishop of Coventry, the Rt Rev Christopher Cocksworth, a leading traditionalist, insisted that marriage should remain between a man and a woman and said that gay relationships fell short of God’s “ideal”.

But it also condemned “censorious judgment” and urged priests not to treat the issue of recognising civil partnerships as “simply closed”, urging them to approach the question on a case-by-case basis.

“In pastoral responses a degree of flexibility may be called for in finding ways to express the Church’s teaching practically,” it said.

  1. Not his god's ideal? What a load of crap -- as though he has just gotten a text or a tweet from god "It's not my ideal, but you can say nice words as long as you don't pretend they are as good as all my other children"

The arrogance of the COE never ceases to amaze me; for a church that was founded because Henry wanted to re-define marriage -- that is, get a divorce multiple times, they have an awfully short memory.

Every time a bishop opens his mouth the church becomes less and less relevant.

  2. Who would want a special blessing from a child rapist? Weird.

  3. "for a church that was founded because Henry wanted to re-define marriage -- that is, get a divorce multiple times, they have an awfully short memory." Great point! The COE was born out of the king's need for divorce, something very against the Catholic Church's doctrine. You would think that they would be a little more open-minded...

  4. The Rt Rev Cocksworth is against gay marriage?

There's a joke in there somewhere but I'm not going to dig for it!

  5. Right, so a church founded to let Henry #6 dump his current wife for another one doesn't think my marriage is God's ideal?
They can take their second-class 'blessing' and shove it up where Edward #2 got it shoved.

  6. As usual it's all about MONEY. They won't allow us to use their churches for marriage but they want us to come and pay them for blessings. They are starting to see that they are missing a potential revenue source.

Fu@k them ! DO NOT give these corrupt haters any of our money !

  7. patronising claptrap from an organisation that still wants us to remain second class .
An RCC friend of mine once said that the RCC was founded on a rock but the Anglican Church was founded on a whorebed!

  8. The COE is the ultimate example of a religion of expediency. For all intents and purposes they are Catholicism-lite, created so a King from long ago could divorce [and murder] his many wives, and seize church property. This is literally the reason for the creation of the Church of England - Anglican/Episcopal Church. Understand, I'm not 'defending' the RC Church in any way with this post. They're sleazy, obviously, too.

    Just saying.

  9. Just anotehr way to avoid giving gays full recongition with marriage

Sorry COE you lost that battle long ago even though we're still hoping you will evolve.

As for the catholic church , well the nutjob cardinal Obrien said gay marriage was grotesque

What of course was grotesque was his inappropriate touching of priests etc whose job/ career he controlled.

the sooner hte better that the church of Hitler , Eichmann, Goebbels, Mengele and Himmler is in rome turned into a sewer pumping station the better.
