Danish Researchers Hopeful HIV Cure Could Be Here Soon

Danish researchers believe they are on the verge of some big news in the battle against HIV, Business Insider reports:

HivDanish scientists are expecting results that will show that “finding a mass-distributable and affordable cure to HIV is possible.” They are conducting clinical trials to test a “novel strategy” in which the HIV virus is stripped from human DNA and destroyed permanently by the immune system.

Human trials are currently underway which have proven successful in lab tests:

The technique involves releasing the HIV virus from “reservoirs” it forms in DNA cells, and bringing it to the surface of the cells. Once it comes to the surface, the body’s natural immune system can kill the virus through being boosted by a “vaccine.”
...

Dr. Ole Søgaard, a senior researcher at the Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, who is leading the study said: “I am almost certain that we will be successful in releasing the reservoirs of HIV. The challenge will be getting the patients’ immune system to recognise the virus and destroy it. This depends on the strength and sensitivity of individual immune systems.”

Fifteen patients are currently taking part in the trials, and if they are found to have successfully been cured of HIV, the “cure” will be tested on a wider scale.

  1. Im cautiously optimistic.

You hear these sensationalist stories all the time, but backing it up with new techniques versus just some fluke gives this story a bit more weight.

    Nevertheless, Im hopeful.

  2. I read this a few days ago and still don't know what a DNA cell is. Maybe a journalist with no science knowledge? I just wish that part of the original article wasn't continuously repeated, it makes me question the validity of the rest.

  3. Sigh. Attempt to gain publicity + $ ? Just complete the human trials before getting people's hopes up. How many AIDS 'cures' have come down the pike over the years?

I don't think they're will be any cure for the foreseeable future, just very expensive and profitable treatments.

  4. I'm tired of crappy science reporting. It's not just TR. Blogs just report the latest press release without integrating previous information.

If you follow the link this trial is using Panobinostat, a cancer drug, similar to Vorinostat which is already in clinical trials in the USA.

Basically the cancer drugs "activate" "sleeping HIV" in "resevoirs." Once activated...the immune system coupled with HIV meds may provide a "functional cure."

  5. HIV does not cause AIDS. Talk of a cure for HIV is pointless nonsense driven by scientists linked to the big drugs firms. Follow the money trail.

  6. QJ201--Glad someone said that.

What I can't figure out is the giant Disco Ball of Death in the pic accompanying the story.

  7. ratbastard, there haven't been ANY "aids cures" come down the pike over the years. There have been only hints of how the actual HIV virus works in the system. Thus, we have had retroviral drugs that can tame or control the virus ability to replicate in the T-cells and attack, then destroy, the human immune system.

There have been stories of how scientists are getting close to understand the HIV virus' DNA and how it attaches itself to T-4 cells but always those articles are caveats that a cure may be possible in X amount of years.

It is the same with this story. They project only that with this new information a "cure" might be possible. It is the media that sensationalizes science's research and changes "possible" and/or "probable" to "definite". It's all wishful thinking.

Let's hope that one day there will be a cure.

And, as for the resident Alex Jones wing-nut who insists that "HIV does not cause AIDS", the research has been irrefutable that HIV does cause the human immune system to collapse, which is AIDS.

  8. @Jamal,

I was referring to alleged promising 'cures' or treatments that don't pan out quite as advertised.

  9. It's become a rule of thumb that any post on TR about HIV will be met with a comment insisting that HIV does not cause AIDS. It's seems these people spend their lives combing the internet for places to post their nonsense conspiracy theory. It's unfortunate that they can't find a more useful way to spend their time.

  10. People with already weakened immune systems were probably the incubators of the modern AIDS scourge. And that was mostly due to fast living lifestyle and heavy substance abuse among guys engaging in very risky behavior. It then spread to people with weakened immune systems due to health problems, age, and to those with blood disorders who needed frequent transfusions, or just people undergoing routine medical procedures. So in a manner of speaking, AIDS originally manifested itself and incubated among guys who had seriously compromised immune systems prior to HIV.

  11. ratbastard... drop the rat part of your name and its settled.

    Posted by: NorthoftheBorder | Apr 29, 2013 12:13:16 PM

  12. HIV certainly causes AIDS because no only gay men with lousy lifestyles get AIDS. The only common factor in AIDS is HIV infections. Please learn how pathology research works.

There have been numerous studies showing that the rat and mouse variants used in almost all medical trials are so flawed as to offer no insight into human diseases, so it's no surprise if they can cure rats of AIDS, but the cure doesn't work in human trials. The entire process is pure folly.

  13. @Northoftheborder,

What exactly did I say that offended you? The truth offends you? And how was what I said 'homophobic' or offensive to the average gay guy?

    Are you Canadian?

    Posted by: ratbastard | Apr 29, 2013 12:18:20 PM

  14. @anon,

I said in my post that IT STARTED, incubated so-to-speak, apparently among gay men who lived a fast lifestyle involving serious substance abuse [which weakened their immune system], and dangerous activity. Patient zero is believed to have been a French-Canadian airline steward who was notorious for his proclivities. And he knew he was infected and still went out and deliberately infected other men. This is all fact, not fiction.

  15. Ratbastard, while you're busy spouting "all facts" and what not, I recommend taking a break and looking up the name "Robert Rayford."

    Posted by: RyanInWyo | Apr 29, 2013 12:27:57 PM

  16. Hey Rattie,

Patient Zero is a myth, or at least the version you describe. HIV was spreading for a while before we figured out what it qas. People were dying of unusual pneumonias and cancers for a while before ae noticed the commonalities and linked them with the syndrome.

Ergo, your alleged Patient Zero is a fiction, as he could not have known he was ill while the virus lay dormant in his body before the advent of HIV/AIDS research. Ergo, you are an idiot.

  17. @ QJ201:
Thanks, I followed your links but must confess that I don't have the brains to figure it all out.
The conclusion seems that there is a possibility that these new drugs will tease our the reservoirs of cells and the immune system in healthy adults will kill them.
Seems far fetched, especially if all the reservoirs don't empty.....the patient could be back at ground zero.

  18. I've heard of Rayford before. Yes, there were people who we now know died of AIDS going back to at least the 50s. But why did it explode onto the scene at the time it did? The answer[s] are obvious: the critical mass of humanity were now traveling all over the world due to modern and reasonably priced air travel, a critical mass of international trade, more people going to places where diseases were dormant, contracting them, and bringing them home. And of course the social revolution of the 60s and 70s that brought about a sea change in attitudes towards sex and drug use. There's no question the earliest victims in the late 70s-early 80s were primarily gay men who engaged in risky behavior and had compromised immune systems due to substance abuse be it street drugs, alcohol, or both. I'm not looking down my nose at these men. I'm not saying they deserved what they got. Just keeping it real.

  20. So AIDS denialists still exist? I thought you creatures had moved on to the next big lie, heliocentrism? The causal relationship of HIV and AIDS is scientific fact, the peer-reviewed studies are unequivocal and there is overwhelming consensus in the medical field. The causality is only a question in the minds of uninformed conspiracy theorists who think that spending 5 minutes on the internet reading a website is equal to spending decades scrutinizing the disease in an actual study. HAART works and saves lives, stop spreading your lies and harming people who need treatment.
