HBO Picks Up Ryan Murphy Pilot 'Open'

HBO has picked up a new Ryan Murphy (Glee, American Horror Story, The New Normal) pilot, according to the Hollywood Reporter:

MurphyOpen is described as a multi-character exploration of the complex, ever-evolving landscape of sexuality, monogamy and intimacy in relationships. Murphy and Gussis penned the pilot and will executive produce. Glee and American Horror Story's Dante Di Loreto will executive produce for Ryan Murphy Television and 20th Television's cable arm Fox 21. (Murphy is under an overall deal at 20th.)

Casting on Open, which landed at HBO following a multiple network bidding war, will begin immediately ahead of a fall production start date.

  1. Darn, I was hoping it was the new drama about loss of anal tone.

  2. Didn't HBO already explore those themes with its "Tell Me You Love Me"?

  3. "BEACH HOUSE!". Love New Normal.

  5. Prediction (if the show lasts): Terrific first season, so-so first half of the second season, really bad second half of the second season, incredibly almost mind-bogglingly terrible third season.

It is, after all, a Ryan Murphy show.*

*(the exception-- so far-- being "American Horror Story.")

  6. Bobbyjoe you're mistaken. American Horror Story is not the exception. The first season was AMAZING. The first half of the second season was a bit wonky but interesting. Then the second half just had a WTF feeling and not in a good way. It hasn't had a third yet.

  7. Man, I'm ever so sick of Ryan Murphy and his sense of self-importance (see his Twitter battle with that band that didn't want their songs in Glee). And I'm with you, JP -- AHS's first season was great, until the last American Hallmark Story episode, which sucked. And I loved the 2nd season even more, up until the last 3 episodes or so, and true to form, I hated the finale. Hated it. We'll see what the third season brings.

And I hate Glee with the fiery passion of a thousand suns.

  8. HBO is just AMAZING!
Shows like VEEP and GIRLS make regular cable TV very boring.
    Looking forward to watching Open.

  9. It's hard to sustain a series week after week - especially if your trying to address issues other than family/friend disagreements or the like. I think he's amazingly talented, but he either needs to hire additional writers, or face the fact that he needs more time to produce a worthy finished product.
