Minnesota House Schedules Marriage Equality Vote for Thursday

Minnesota's full House will take up marriage equality this Thursday, the AP reports:

MinnesotaHouse DFL leadership announced the plans Tuesday. House Speaker Paul Thissen has previously said that scheduling the vote would be a signal that DFL leaders secured the 68 votes needed to pass the bill.

If the House passes the bill, the next vote would be in the state Senate. But its passage has been seen as more secure there than in the House. Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton has promised to sign the bill, which would allow gay couples to start getting married in Minnesota on Aug. 1.

Meanwhile, the Senate Finance Committee is considering the bill this morning.

Good. If it’s as close as it’s been stated, then this will pressure waffling House members to take a decision. Either that or they already have the votes which would be perfect.

    Wishing the best from Minnesota!

Received this text message from a politically active close friend, while he was sitting in hearing today at the Minnesota Capitol, regarding the head count for Thursday: “Yes. Confident.”

Minnesota (fingers crossed) will make 12.

Then Illinois, hopefully, 13. And why does that matter?

Thirteen is the nail in the coffin of a federal constitutional amendment. I know that hasn’t really been a live threat lately, but still – it’s a good club to hit the opposition with.

You need 38 states to pass an amendment. So 13 committed to marriage equality pretty much takes it off the table.

You’re right, James, that is a big deal. If for symbolic reasons more than anything.

I read that one likely yes vote was going to be absent due to medical reasons (David Dill). If that’s so, is his vote going to be necessary or do we have the votes in Minnesota without him?

Hope we can get it done, the equality side sounds very confident if not completely committed. Fingers crossed!
