Russia's State Duma Passes Ban on 'Gay Propaganda' in 434-0 Vote

Duma

A disgusting action was taken today by Russia's lower parliament as it voted unanimously for a ban on "gay propaganda", the AP reports:

The lower house of Russia's parliament has overwhelmingly passed a bill that stigmatises the gay community and bans the distribution of information about homosexuality to children.

The State Duma voted 434-0 with one abstention to approve the Kremlin-backed legislation, which imposes hefty fines for holding gay pride rallies or providing information about the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community to minors.

The upper house still needs to approve the bill and Putin still needs to sign it.

Both are expected to happen.

  6. Congrats to Russia as it joins countries like North Korea, Iran, Uganda and Saudi Arabia in its disgusting treatment of LGBT citizens. There's no such thing as the separation of church (or mosque) and state (or, in the case of NK, cult personality and state) in these homophobic culture countries. There seems to be no belief in science either.

  10. To expect enlightened policies on any issues from the Russians is like expecting pigs to fly. It is not by accident that Russians were ruled by Czars and Communists for their entire history. They are a backward people.

  11. Indeed, the USSR is back, and Dictator Putin is calling the shots. Russia has certainly gone to s**t since he took power.

  13. It just shows how brainwashing and dictatorships go hand-in-hand.
A sick country on many, many levels.
Hatred only leads to more hatred and ugliness. Good luck with that Russia!

  22. I have not seen a serious article explaining why this extreme homophobia is taking place. It seems unusual that it is going in
the opposite direction from most Western/European nations.
Historically, Russia has gone in swings from wanting to be part
of Europe (the creation of St. Petersburg) to turning inward (the
    Communist era.)

    Why now? Economics? Political power?

Anyone know of any articles that explain this within a larger context?

  24. The Olympics are an ideal place to humiliate the Russian government. This needs to be made a big priority for the international gay community. We can actually affect things using this as leverage.
