Gay Tourists In Russia Face Jail Time, Deportation

With Russia's new anti-gay "propaganda" ban now in effect thanks to being approved by the Russian Upper House and signed into law by President Putin, travel site Skift now warns that gays traveling to Russia could face being jailed for up to two weeks before being deported from the country.

Anything considered pro-gay, from gay-affirmative speech, to gays holding hands in public, to even wearing rainbow suspenders is now illegal.

Evidently the law can be interpreted as such that even existing constitutes propaganda that is a "harmful influence on children." This interpretation of Russia's new law exposes the pathetic bald-faced lie that gays in Russia are "[...]ordinary and equal members of society," who "are not being discriminated against in any way."

With the winter Olympics a mere seven months away, it will be interesting to see how Russia's bigotry plays out on the international stage despite the IOC's assurances that Olympians will not be targeted. We'll see how well the institutionalized bigotry is restrained when Johnny Weir takes to the ice.

  1. As the Winter O's approach this is going to turn into another Westboro church-style win for gay people everywhere. To wit, Russia will so paint itself into a corner and make itself so ugly in the matter that more people will realize how unfairly gay people are treated.

  2. I agree.

  3. Sankt Petersburg used to be my favourite city in the world. I visited it multiple times, both in summer and winter, and it was wonderful. I wouldn't feel safe visiting again, as I am sure many gays feel now... Too bad.

  4. LOL Russia didn't drink the Kool-Aid and is not playing when it comes to that gay sh!t. Go be gay somewhere else, you're not bringing homosexuality to Russia, they're not having it, period.

  5. One of the last places I'd want to go anyway, so who cares? Let them steep in their bigotry.

  6. Russia vs. homosexuality = the proverbial ostrich that sticks its head in the sand so it doesn't have to recognize what's happening around it. This law is utter bullsh*t on the part of Putin and his government. I really hope the US and other LGBT-friendly nations participating in the Winter Olympics push Russia to the brink when it tries to censor and/or punish gay Olympic athletes. Russia will look like the ignorant backward state it has become.

  7. Russia is really portraying itself as a backward dump.

As for the IOC - well they say that Olympians are not at risk.

    What about sportsfans?

Is the IOC warning LGBT people against attending these games?

    If not then why not?

  8. Won't be going to Russia any time soon...

  9. What a depressing gray ugly hellhole. Even St Peterberg the crown jewel of Russia is a dreary third rate dump. Bad food, ugly people, 15th Century thinking. The US should have nuked them during the Cold War and spared the world this horror show.

Good news: because of profound alcoholism their population is actually declining. The life expectancy rate is lowing every year. See later Putin.

  11. Yeah, I didn't plan on visiting Nazi Russia anyway.

  12. I wonder if people will be arrested in air ports if they have those rainbow straps on their luggage I've seen so many people use?

  13. Is Elton John still performing in Russia this month? Has he spoken out at all about what is happening there?

I would think he would cancel his shows as a sign of disapproval of Russia's legislation agains homosexuality, but then again, it seems for Elton a paycheque is a paycheque.

  14. Unfortunately, many of Russia's so-called allies are those countries which treat us the same way - or worse. Case in point, Muslim nations in Africa & Asia, and Catholic ones in Latin America. But tourist dollars speak pretty loud. It's time we demand that all those cruise lines which include St. Pete in their Northern Europe itineraries skip that port altogether. Gay people take a lot of cruises.

  15. Wasn't planning on visiting a country so backwards it makes Nazi Germany look sane.
Winter Olympics will be a joke just like that countries political policies and dehumanizing of its citizens.

  16. Those of you arguing "I'd never go to Russia anyway" are missing the point entirely. It's not about how the world revolves around you, you arrogant, half-assed, witless wonders.

  17. I would love to go to Russia but would never set foot there at this time. Too bad.

  18. It's easy to say that we will boycott travel to Russia or purchase of their goods, but, as in Africa, the Caribbean and other less than tolerant regions, the question is how do we help the LGBT folks who are suffering the persecution in these countries! Most cannot seek asylum in more gay-friendly countries (nor do they necessarily want to), so we have to help them fight for their dignity and rights in their home countries.

  19. My husband is Latvian (1/2) and we wanted to go to Russia (his family has some ties to the Romanovs) but we will skip there and return to The Netherlands (his other 1/2) and visit that sane country.

  20. To the modernization of the present of modern age to what Russia could be, and what was, is no longer, the cold war is over and paranoia and greed held back potential. This law show's a lack of there ability to grow and a continuation of weakness, what they could be and could achieve in a more positive manner. Time has shown that restrictions in society only hold back potential positives of growth, financially in economics but also advancement of there people and there abilities to help it gain more positive future. Cultured countries show a more sophisticated level. How do you know by the world in which you live in, by what is within you. Cultivate virtue within your self and it will grow Cultivate it in your family, and it will grow, do the same with your community and then your country. If good things happen, positivity has bigger gains. The bigger man has the ability not to hate or feed into that weakness those who do and say for example start the fight are the weak fools, those who can control them selves are the stronger person. btw why do you keep flying your plains over our border spying, don't you Russians have your own beavers? we know you have a stupid obsession level of paranoia and greed and on a big level in eye of the international community it shows you are the weak country with weak leadership and you are the ones who are making a fool out of your self's on the eyes of the world. You also are embarrassing your self's. Mr Green Tea Putin.. does he know its 2013?? or is the cave just comfortable place ?? are you vikings or barbarians because since your army didn't leave Georgia..apparently your also marauders..but do you have the wooden boats and those helmets with horns??

  21. Interesting comments

So Russia is having the Olympics, how much did they pay the Olympic commity behind closed doors to get it. Or did the Russian Mob organize it. Well your country really needs to get with the times. I agree with that comment.

  22. Incest, Pedophilia and Beastiality are legal in Russia. Even encouraged. But homosexuality is taboo. Go figure.

    Posted by: Kev C | Jul 12, 2013 12:06:27 AM

  23. Whoever said the people want these laws. Was there a fair and unbiased vote by the people or was the policy thrust on the people. It was the Russian Parliament that passed the bill and Putin signed it into law. It is ironic that Russia has taken an extreme position against homosexuality, using verbiage directly from the religious zealots, given Russia’s past stance against religious freedom.

Russian politicians are trying to divert attention away from the government's failed policies and economy. If they continue with these actions they will find themselves thrown out of the UN and the Olympic committee.

Arresting international visitors without a good cause is international political suicide. I would have understood deportation but that was not done. Furthermore, denying the international visitors a fair trial is adding insult to injury.

Those that I feel the most concern for is the LGBT individuals of Russia. They now live in a very dangerous world were victimization of them is being sanctioned by their government. This is a treacherous path the Russian government has chosen, if the people do not put a stop to it, who will the government use as their scapegoats next. Whose rights and privileges will be kept and who will find themselves without. This reminds me of beginning of Hitler’s Nazi Regime; they started by pointed to the Jewish people as the cause of the country’s problems, and ended up trying to eradicate anyone who did not fit their idea of a perfect race.

  24. Seriously... Russia and Nigeria have the right idea. All of these homos infecting our children. Got news for you homos, children come from Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve.

I wish there were law here in North America to protect the straight people from all that gay carp. I'm tired of seeing these prancy little shitheads jumping around all the time.

Go shoot yourself or by an island so the world can ship you all to it...
