Six Gay Rights Supporters Detained In Moscow For 'Promoting Non-Traditional Sex Relations'

Under the freshly minted anti-gay 'propaganda' law, a group of six gay rights activists in Moscow were detained by police on Wednesday for 'promoting non-traditional sex relations' at an unauthorized rally, RIA Novosti reports:

MoscowThe Moscow Gay Pride movement decided to hold a public event outside the Russian State Children's Library 'to offer minors unbiased information about the nature of homosexuality' and to 'draw public attention to homophobic and discriminatory treatment of underage gays and lesbians,' the GayRussia website said.

After a request to hold the rally was rejected by City Hall on grounds that the event would violate Russia's ban on homosexual propaganda, activist Alexei Davydov decided to hold a so-called one-person picket, which, according to Russian legislation, does not require prior approval by city authorities. Davydov was detained by police shortly after he unfurled a poster that said, "Being gay is normal," near an entrance to the children's library. Five other activists accompanying him were also detained.

The city's police press service said that the 'suspects' are scheduled to appear in court at a later date, which 'will determine the measure of their responsibility.'

Interestingly enough, Russian articles about the detained activists bear the following disclaimer: "This article contains information not suitable for readers younger than 18 years of age, according to Russian legislation"

  1. I would not be surprised if Russia started treating homosexuals more like the Germans did with the Jews.

  3. We should follow these developments in Russia closely; there is a pogrom coming, egged on by the Orthodox Church.
And we cannot afford to be quiet or ignore this; soon these " homosexual deviants" will be sent to Special Camps.
We have seen it all before; let's expose this NOW and not wait until they raise a hue and cry against all gays so as to be unstoppable.
Ant the European Union and the USA have a vast responsibility here to prevent a human rights disaster.

  5. That's really messed up. And it reminds me of what Yahoo has done to Tumblr. And the antigay Web blocks in Seattle's new tall budding. Not to minimize the horrors of Russian rule now, but corporatist/fundamentalists here have similar goals perhaps.

  6. In front of a childrens' museum? It is wrong to not respect those boundaries and go after minors. It also makes this look like a Western conspiracy to go after children.

  9. 'Gay is normal' is hardly going after children. It's telling worried LGBT kids that there's nothing wrong with them.

These brave Russian activists are facing terrible oppression so I hope they can hear our voices of support.

@Jack is right, we have to do more.
