First Gay Couples to Marry in Uruguay as Law Comes Into Effect Today

Uruguay

Uruguay's marriage equality law comes into effect today, four months after its passage by the nation's Congress, the BBC reports:

About half a dozen couples should apply for dates at civil registry offices in the coming days, activists say. Following Argentina in 2010, Uruguay became the second South American nation to pass same-sex marriage legislation.

Sergio Miranda and Rodrigo Borda (below), the publishers of a gay magazine in Montevideo and partners for 14 years, are expected to be one of the first couples to tie the knot in the country.

  5. Travis, is not a race they do it because of love not because they can some people don't want to be married yet as time goes by who knows how many more will do it the important thing is they can now don't you think?

  6. @MITCHEL Great comment. Uruguay is a very nice country. Nice people. Educated. Highest literacy rate in the Hemisphere. Good health-care system. Temperate climate (right now it's winter there). I'm going probably the beginning of 2014 (height of summer). Looking to maybe retire there. Regardless of their progressive politics, socially they are somewhat conservative and your comment is spot on. The right to marry doesn't mean rush out and do it. I think many gay Uruguayans have yet to realize the impact of having marriage equality as a reality. But, even foreign couples can get married there so it will be a boon for one of the fastest-growing economies in Latin America. They've got a hot-shot tech industry that's going gang-busters.
