Video Chronicles Russian Bigots' Brutal Attack Of Trans Woman

Previously, Towleroad has shown you bits and pieces of the horrifying social media posts coming from Russia. Anti-LGBT vigilantes have taken to the web attempting to lure unsuspecting victims into meeting a potential partner at a particular time and place, only to surprise and ambush them as soon as they show up. These vigilantes then record the violent ambushes before posting them on the web, often outing victims to their family and friends.

Trans-bashing-1This latest video is simply one of the latest to pop up on the Russian social media site In it, five men ambush and brutalize a trans woman in a public park. Since the video begins with the physical attack, it is not immediately apparent if the traditional pre-ambush verbal confrontation and interrogation took place. Nevertheless, the end result is a chilling attack that is among the most violent to find its way to the web.

The video does not appear to be directly affiliated with the "Occupy" extremist movement perpetuated by infamous Russian ultra-nationalist and former skin head, Maxim Martsinkevich, AKA "Cleaver". Instead, the video appears to be affiliated with a site called, which hosts videos of amateur "street fights" from around the globe. John Aravosis of AmericaBlog attempted to upload a copy of the video to YouTube. Its ultra-violent content promptly got it removed from the site. Aravosis also reports that:

"The Russian government refused to investigate these crimes, even with videos clearly showing the hometowns and faces of the perpetrators.  Only a week or two ago, when the international press picked up on this story did the Russian authorities claim they would investigate. No word on anything they’ve done to solve and stop these crimes."

Russians-trans-woman-largeAccording to Aravosis, the video's title even goes so far as to label the victim a "homosexual", illustrating the perpetrators' ignorance to the difference between being gay and transgender. Then again, even if these attackers had been aware of the difference, it is unlikely that their response would have been any different.

Those wishing to view the video can do so HERE. Be advised, however, that it portrays graphic and disturbing content.

  1. Massive and unwarranted domestic spying, Abu Ghraib, endless detention without charge or hope of escape, wars launched without justification that go on and on and on. The damage Bush did to out moral authority is reflected everywhere else too and prevents our leaders from powerfully condemning this disgusting abuse.

  3. @Sundayboy,

You forgot to mention Obama. Obama has been president for the past 5 years and he has kept Bush's policies in place, even expanded them.

Beside, this has nothing to do with the U.S., Bush or Obama.

  4. Apparently, gay propoganda in Russia is only limited if it's positive propoganda. Beating, humiliation, murder, harrassment, degradation, and abuse of Russia's LGBTI community are perfectly fine in the public sphere and in full view of minors.

  5. As a child of the Cold War, I never felt comfortable with our new "friendship" with Russia. Turns out, that was with good reason.

RE: Sundaboy' post, this situation has nothign to do with GW Bush - although I would be curious to know what the former President thinks about all of this sinc he famously looked into Putin's eyes and saw his soul or something like that. The Bushes are known to have gay friends - and Mrs. Bush is a supporter of gay marriage.

  7. Harvey Fierstein is right. It's time to stop being the victim. We need to unite globally and get militant. Enough of the hatred, harassment, humiliation, beatings, and being targeted for death. Noones going to take us seriously until we fight back. If they want to fight dirty, then so should we. Lets see how they like it.

  8. I don't know how to respond to the violence inflicted on this woman.

In some ways, it seems worse than Iran. Granted, the Iranians hang their gay men, while the Russians just endorse severe harassment and imprisonment and torture based on supposed "propoganda" laws. But the Iranians at least pretend to honor their transexual women, instead of endorsing this sort of open endorsement of dishonor against them.

The russian "propaganda" law supposedly protects children from exposure to good messages about the lgbt community. There is no sense whatsoever in that rationale. It is obviously just a slight mass to endorse violence against lgbt people. So the law operates both to create state violence against lgbt people who the state harasses, detains, and probably unceremoniously tortures. But it also serves to endorse parallel violence against lgbt people in the private sector.

And so, fellow gay and bisexual men, here's an example of why ours is an lgbt movement. And has to be. Even in fighting for ENDA here at home so I can come out in ANY workplace without fear of automatic firing despite high performance. It's, honestly, spiritual. It calls for us to summon similar, shared courage, dignity, and self-respect--all in the face of a world bent on denying us those very basic human qualities. And we are called to not only do so at a level sufficient to squeak through. We are called to do so and MAKE it better for others in the process.

On a practical level, this video makes me wish badass-levels of martial arts became INTEGRAL to lgbt culture. C'mon guys, if transexuals are pulling it off at your gyms, you KNOW you can too, right. ;-). Plus we all love the lesbian ladies who lead our pick-up backyard football games; they need to be part of a martial arts craze, too! And the other thing: the spiritual fortitude of martial arts discipline may just be the key in a lot of young people's early lives. It's just that the leaders of such martial arts need to be lgbtqa!!!

On a more geopolitical level, this whole Russian focus is inseparable from nuclear war risks, right? How do we get around that? I've seen no one address the magnitude of this concern? Is it because nuclear war craziness concerns too easily blow all other basic human rights concerns out of the water? Why not?

  10. I will agree that the people of Russia has gone through such difficult times during the 90s when trying to establish their supposed "democracy" after the fall of communism. Sometimes at the costs of those young men and women who were preyed upon by sycophants and pedophiles offering them money or other such promises only to take advantage of them and videotape it. It's extremely disturbing. A part of me wonders if this backlash towards us is due to those terrible times. The hatred and violence is just as horrifying as what was going on in the 90s.

  11. I really wouldn't like to do any injustice to anyone, but I find there is something off about this video. To me it seems staged. And I can't imagine a transsexual walking through a park in Russia dressed like that.
