Church Sign: ‘Some Ppl are Gay. Get Over It, Love GOD’

A church sign at the All Saints Anglican Church in Chermside, north of Brisbane, Australia has "overwhelming support from local parishioners" according to the Herald Sun.

Said Pastor Julie Woolner: "I do believe spirituality is far bigger than sexuality,’’ she said. “And I did find most of the parishioners here took a positive view of that sign."

Heya – just a little clarification from DownUnder.

Chermside is a northern suburb of Brisbane. It’s most definitely not a “trendy” inner-urban enclave. It’s very, very middle class, middle of the road leaning conservative politically, has a massive shopping centre plunked right in the middle of the sprawl of houses on quarter acre blocks – and this church is just down the road from that mega commercial centre. So, to have this message on a main road, in a fairly “average” area is brilliant. Also, for those that might not be aware, “Anglican” in Australia equates to “Episcopalian” in the US. The parish priest (not exactly “pastor”) is the Reverend Julie Woolner, a wonderfully intelligent woman with great social justice credentials as well as being a well-liked local minister.

The other interesting thing is that Towleroad has picked this up for the “Herald Sun”, one of Rupert Murdoch’s right wing tabloids. Perhaps they were hoping for a “scandal” reactionary story? Again, good to see that the response if positive! Even if our Queensland State Government and our new right wing Federal Government (same party as the State one) doesn’t want us to be that visible or have total equality, others will make the running.
