Elton John Balks at Suggestion He Never Knew Liberace Lived a Gay 'Lifestyle': VIDEO

At tonight's 2013 Emmy Awards, Matt Damon and Michael Douglas introduced Elton John, who performed his track "Home Again" as a tribute to Liberace, but not before balking at a speech — which perhaps he had never read — which used the word "lifestyle" to refer to Liberace's sexuality and also suggested that Elton had no idea he was gay.

Quipped Elton when he got to that line in the speech: "Yeah right. Um...oh well!"

  1. Yet another homophobic slur from the Emmys producers. Does the production team include Pat Robertson? The whole show should be flushed down the toilet.

  2. I may be wrong but I took this as the way the joke writers wrote it for him: "What I was not aware of was his lifestyle [beat]. Yeah, right."
Once again, the gay people asked to read these lines should have told the writers ahead of the show, "If this refers to his orientation, that's not a lifestyle. His lavish lifestyle was very public even to people who didn't know he was gay, so this doesn't make any sense."

  3. Elton is the reason I watched the Emmy's this year. I was hoping he would play a section from Liberace's music. It feels like he missed an opportunity. It reminds me of when he performed with Lady Gaga three years ago at the Grammy's and didn't perform Bad Romance with her instead Speechless. Anyway, it's a good performance.

  4. It was really random that he performed some crap original song that really didn't relate to Liberace at all despite his intro instead of just covering one of his pieces..

  5. I was hoping for "Candelabra In The Wind".

Elton was there to promote his new album.

  8. why did they call it a lifestyle? that's such a cringe inducing word and is totally incorrect. But I forgot, 99% of gays in Hollywood are coke snorting, risk taking closet cases. The self hate bleeds everywhere there.

  10. This old has been Uncle Tom needs to go away. He can pack up his over the hill houseboy, that publicity baby and go live in Russia. I'm sure they will love him there. They need a sell out queen that's willing to betray his own kind for a buck and an ounce of attention.

  11. So strange. He kept looking down reading the teleprompter and then played a weird song with no connection to Liberace.

This old fool has really lost it...and he's opening the Olympics at Sochi? Ugh.

  12. imho, a performer / speaker is duty bound to actually read - and better to actually memorize - a speech prior to delivery. He ain't doin' it, for free, so perhaps actually doing the work would be apropos... Just sayin'...

  13. Wow, a lot of crazy, over the top reactions to this.

  16. If he had shown up at rehearsal, he could have voiced his objection then.

  17. I don't remember much from last night (the memory isn't what it used to be), but Dave Holmes posted on Twitter that he thought it was strange that nobody ever said the word Gay during any portion of the program devoted to Liberace.

But then again the whole show was a mess, so it's not like we should have expected more.
