93-Year-Old Gay Irishman Marries 57-Year-Old Partner of 37 Years

Cork, Ireland-born artist Patrick Scott married his companion of 37 years, 57-year-old Eric Pearce this week, the Irish Examiner reports:

A long-running love story culminated yesterday in the marriage of Cork-born artist Patrick Scott, at the ripe old age of 93, to 57-year-old Eric Pearce, his companion of 37 years. The two, whom Eric says met many years ago "in Dublin at a party, across a crowded room", wed in a civil ceremony at the registry office on Lower Grand Canal St.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner, Eric said there was a "deep, abiding love between them" and they had wanted to marry for some time.

On why they were doing it now in the autumn of Patrick’s life, Eric said the union was a "completion of a life and a celebration of a life that has been intensely private, like the man himself."

Dubliner Pearce, who has three daughters by a previous marriage during which time he lived in Cork, said he had his children’s full support.  "They are three wonderful women. They are so delighted for me. They regard it as a cause for celebration. I am very lucky to have such broadminded children" he said.

Congrats to the happy couple.

  1. So he picked up a 20-year-old when he was 56? Nice...

  2. Lovely story but Ireland does not have marriage equality yet, only civil partnerships, which do not have all the benefits of actual marriage.

  3. I'm pretty sure that 92 doesn't qualify as the "autumn" of his life, but I wish them the best.

  4. @ SCOTT :

You should try to get out more.
That your're the first comment and an ageist one, speaks for the narrow minded little cliques that the community has brought with it over the last few decades.

I look at this couple and am amazed that they found happiness and love.....even after an 'opposite sex' marriage.....they still found their way through.

I look back to ACT UP and NY and St. Vincent's and the plague of AIDS and now I see the Supreme Court approving SMarriage.....even DADT is gone......I saw two gay dads being the most loving and supportive of their kid,......
What an astonishing journey for the gay community..... what astonishing people along the way.

And I have to read this harpie, SCOTT, with his ever so incisive comment on another's love...... let's get rid of the small minded worms.
Go away, Scott, far far away.

  5. Was Pearce a teenage father of threel?!? And then was "turned" and stolen by a man thrice his age?!?!? This is totally a (film festival) movie waiting to happen!

  6. @Jackfkntwist calm your nerve. It is not being ageist to look at a THIRTY SIX year age difference with a side-eye. It is amazing, however, that they have been together for 37 years.

Indeed, our community has been on an astonishing journey over the last several decades. Most importantly is we can now agree to disagree and not blindly agree or vote based on shared experience.

I wish the couple, Scott, and you lots of love and happiness.

  7. A 36 year age difference that actually worked out? Wow! I must say that I am impressed. Congrats to the happy couple! Now if only the 57 year old can find a suitor who is 21 or 22 whenever 93 expires...

  8. If they've been together 37 years, you can't really get on your high horse and say the age difference is a problem, only that it's somehow a problem for you. Clearly, it wasn't for them (as it wasn't for couples like Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy) and that's the only thing that matters.

Congrats on the longevity and on the union.

  9. I don't care who's loving who - 36 years is huge. It's not agist to note it, it would be agist to make a negative comment about it.

As the story is written it also makes the reader want to question when the marriage too place and the kids born - all that before age 20? or was there some overlap?

  10. @ ERNIE :

I was just about to make the exact same point.
Having watched the documentary "Chris and Don" several times, our community should know better than to look askance at another's age difference relationship.

And we need to learn our history !

Yes, Don Bachardy did both appear in and was consultant for "A Single Man"......and he did take care of and nurse Isherwood when he lay dying.
Get off the criticism of age difference bit**es.

  15. Nice story but unfortunately inaccurate since they couldn't have gotten "married" in Ireland. Ireland does not allow gay marriages----yet. The Irish currently have civil partnerships for gay couples.

  16. Sweet story that gives everyone hope they can get a 20 y.o. piece when they're nearing retirement.

  17. Wow. This makes me happy.

  18. The younger man was married and had three daughters before he was 20?

Or was the marriage an interruption in their relationship, or parallel to it?

  19. This story makes me happy - the sour reactions here, not so much. The comments section on Towleroad is fast becoming the unhappiest forum on the internet.Pretty soon, I'll be avoiding it altogether.

  20. I imagine there is some story there, I don't think a 56 y.o. man can keep up with a 20 y.o., but anyways, congratulations if it worked for them. Love wins in all its ways.
