Watch LIVE: New Jersey's First Gay Weddings - VIDEO

Vic

As previously reported, just after midnight EST tonight, same-sex couples will be able to get married in the Garden State.

Newark Mayor and Senator-elect Cory Booker will be joining in on the action and officiating tonight as seven couples say, "I do" in Newark.

You can watch live coverage of one of the first ceremonies taking place in Lambertville, New Jersey HERE.

Also of note was Senator-elect Booker's response to a question he received on Twitter regarding his advocacy for LGBT rights: "It shouldn't matter either way. RT @MrsCommodore @chrisjohnson82 So are you gay, Cory? Curious."

Tonight will be the first time Booker has officiated a wedding while holding public office. NewJersey.com points out, "Since taking office in 2006, Mayor Booker has refused all requests to officiate New Jersey marriages because gay and lesbian couples have been denied that equal right," city spokesman James Allen said in a statement."

UPDATE: Joanne Schailey and Beth Asaro were married just after midnight tonight, becoming one of the first couples to marry in New Jersey. Congratulations to the happy couple!

You can watch a news report from earlier today on the events leading up to the couple's nuptials HERE.

  1. It never occurred to me that anyone would brag about being married in New Jersey.

  3. It is so funny that people STILL think Cory Booker is gay. He isn't. I really wish he was because he is hot, vegetarian, left wing and the right age for me ! Unfortunately he isn't into men. He WILL be President of the USA one day though...

  4. How can they be engaged if gay marriage is not allowed in Australia? Towleroad needs to stop repeating silly news.

  5. People think that he is gay because he doesn't "deny" that he is gay. Which, I personally think is appropriate, because dignifying the rumors with a response gives credence to the thought being gay is shameful. At the same time, a lot of straight people, including many who would be considered supportive of our rights, WOULD/DO NOT want to be thought of as gay. So in their minds, Cory must be gay because he hasn't come out as straight.

Cory is just someone who is truly accepting and comfortable in who he is. Such a dignified man. There was a heckler in Newark right before the first marriage was about to start but Mr. Booker handled it very professionally and candidly. Congrats to all the couples marrying into the morning hours! 14 states down :)

  6. Brian, I believe you're commenting on this other article...

I think it's in couples' interest to publicly express interest in marrying, and attempts to marry, to secure whatever retroactive rights they may have upon the striking down of an illegal marriage law.

  7. Cory Booker is far from left-wing. He is a centrist Democrat who highlights his liberal social positions. It's unlikely he'll ever be president.

  8. Congrats, NJ! Kudos to (soon) Sen. Cory Booker for being a great ally and to the NJ Supreme Court for refusing to let Gov. Christie's political charade and one-man blockage of equality continue. #14 ... Next?

  9. @BRIAN - "How can they be engaged if gay marriage is not allowed in Australia?" People can be engaged wherever they live - Iran even. They just wouldn't be able to get married.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF THE HAPPY COUPLES!

  10. @ENDORA - people would brag about being married in NJ because NJ has a lot going for it. (1) With the passage of marriage equality, NJ is now arguably the most progressive state for LGBT legal rights and protections in the country (CA is a close second - NJ's bullying law is considered stronger). (2) NJ is also one of the best educated states in the country (3) NJ is, depending on the year, #1 or #2 in affluence in the country (CT is the other). (4) NJ is one of the most beautiful states in the country with mountains, seashore, leafy suburbs, farmland, cranberry bogs... surprise, surprise. Kudos to The Garden State!
