Catholic Bishop to Hold 'Exorcism' as Illinois Governor Signs Gay Marriage Into Law

The Roman Catholic Bishop of Springfield, Illinois has big plans to counter the ceremony Illinois Governor Pat Quinn is planning to sing the marraige equality bill into law next week.

PaprockiWrites Bishop Thomas John Paprocki in a press release:

Scheduled for approximately the same time that Gov. Pat Quinn signs into Illinois law the redefinition of civil marriage, Bishop Thomas John Paprocki will offer “Prayers of Supplication and Exorcism in Reparation for the Sin of Same-Sex Marriage” at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Sixth and Lawrence streets in Springfield, on Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 4 to 5 p.m. Clergy, religious and laity are invited to attend.

“The context for this prayer service may be understood by recalling the words of Pope Francis when he faced a similar situation as Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 2010,” Bishop Paprocki said.

Regarding the proposed redefinition of civil marriage in Argentina, then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio wrote on June 22, 2010: “The Argentine people must face, in the next few weeks, a situation whose result may gravely harm the family. It is the bill on matrimony of persons of the same sex. The identity of the family, and its survival, are in jeopardy here: father, mother, and children. The life of so many children who will be discriminated beforehand due to the lack of human maturity that God willed them to have with a father and a mother is in jeopardy. At stake is the total rejection of God’s law engraved in our hearts. ... Let us not be naive: it is not a simple political struggle; it is an intention [which is] destructive of the plan of God. It is not a mere legislative project (this is a mere instrument), but rather a ‘move’ of the father of lies who wishes to confuse and deceive the children of God.”

Bishop Paprocki noted, “The pope’s reference to the ‘father of lies’ comes from the Gospel of John (8:44), where Jesus refers to the devil as ‘a liar and the father of lies.’ So Pope Francis is saying that same-sex ‘marriage’ comes from the devil and should be condemned as such.”

Illinois Speaker Mike Madigan and Governor Pat Quinn are both Catholics.

Adds Paprocki in his release:

“It is scandalous that so many Catholic politicians are responsible for enabling the passage of this legislation and even twisting the words of the pope to rationalize their actions despite the clear teaching of the church,” he said. “All politicians now have the moral obligation to work for the repeal of this sinful and objectionable legislation. We must pray for deliverance from this evil which has penetrated our state and our church.”

  1. Pope Francis is not going to like this

  2. This guy thinks he's clever, using the Pope's past action against him.

What he's leaving out is that the Pope's actions in Argentina back-fired, big-time. Politicians & citizens ALL raised their voices, including the then President of Argentina, to tell the then Cardinal to stay the f*ck out of Civil Law. And it worked!

We can only hope that things go so well here.

  3. Just more pathetic mediaevalism from a church that cannot face up to the modern world.

The church had the same attitude to Gallilleo.
I bet they're disappointed that the Inquisition cannot be used against us.

IMO any gay who still has any loyalty whatever to this bunch of raving bigots is a traitor to all of us.
Any gay who thinks he is not already excommunicated by this church is delusional.
Any gay who subscribes to the Catholic Church by attending or otherwise is accepting his "intrinsically disordered" status, and IMO, has sold his soul.

  4. JackFknTwist: The truth is catholics are a lot less antigay that the hierarchy of their church, and they are a lot less antigay that other confessions, like muslims, mormons or evangelist

  5. The Catholic Church;

2,000 years of trying to destroy love and compassion.

When will they learn, they can't destroy Love.

  8. “It is scandalous that so many Catholic politicians are responsible for enabling the passage of this legislation and even twisting the words of the pope to rationalize their actions despite the clear teaching of the church,”
Missy Bishop's got herself all worked into a lather over this one! What's that verse from the Bible about, “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others." God don't like sanctimonious, Paprocki sweetie.

  10. My favorite Paprocki quote:
"Well, I'm not a very bright man but I was really good looking when I was younger and was able to suck my way to a bishop's post. That's how I got the nickname "knees Paprocki."

  11. The scandal is when Catholic corporate functionaries like Paprocki distort Bergoglio's words against him, to further their own personal pathologies. Then again, Catholic corporate functionaries been distorting, misinterpreting, inventing, and out-and-out lying about various religious text for millennia, so it should hardly come as a surprise.

What's more, I've noticed a distinct strain of anti-Latin bigotry by Caucasian Catholics (like Paprocki), obviously resentful that a Latin American was chosen Pope. A Black President and a Latin Pope! What is their world coming to? They can only lash out in hate and lie to themselves for consolation.

  14. I think it's time to work for the repeal of tax-free status for religious institutions and for taxpayer funding of any separate school religious education. Seriously.

  15. Here's the true scandal: There are more than a few bishops like Paprocki who fear that Francis will actually remove them from their cushy posts after revealing them to have been child molesters and/or complicit in the coverup of sex crimes by church hierarchy. They're trying to get their licks in early on him. Not gonna work, Pap-smear.

  18. I'd love to see who goes to this, btw.
Will Rick Santorum, Maggie Gallagher, Brian Brown et al show up? Or has Ricky finally realized that this is the sort of photo op that continues to block his presidential bids?
Will protestant gay haters like Tony Perkins cross that horrible Catholic threshold?
Will Cardinal George have his chauffeur take him down to Springfield for this or will he be smart enough to stay away?
    Will any Illinois legislators attend?
    This should be interesting.
Believe me, if this were 1600 Paprocki would be holding an auto de fe of mike madigan in the parking lot of the cathedral. Ah... the dark ages... makes you want to pull your kid out of school for the day so he can see what medieval crazy was really all about.
