Marco Rubio: ENDA Will Burden Small Businesses, Lead to 'Frivolous Lawsuits'

RubioAs the Senate prepares to vote on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act next Monday, speculation has now turned to who will be the key 60th vote necessary to avoid filibuster. All 55 Democratic and four GOP Senators have already committed to supporting the bill, and Majority Leader Harry Reid recently told Rachel Maddow "without question, we're going to get at least five Republicans."

Just don't count on Sen. Marco Rubio being that key vote.

Via spokeswoman:

"[Senator Rubio] believes people's qualifications, performance and honesty are the most important qualities by which they should be judged in the workplace. If you're a good worker, that's all that should matter," spokeswoman Brooke Sammon said. "This legislation goes far beyond protecting workers from discrimination based on sexual orientation, and he is currently studying what kinds of burdens it could impose on small businesses, frivolous lawsuits that could result, and ensuring that religious freedoms under the First Amendment are protected."

When asked about ENDA at the annual Faith and Freedom Forum back in June, Rubio asserted that he's "not for any special protections based on orientation."

Who knew being able to safely be yourself at work counts as a special protection.

  1. Well gosh, who would have thought that bigots need to be protected too? Glad you're fighting the "good" fight there Rubio!

  2. The keywords here are "sexual orientation" and "religious freedom". It would be no problem to him if it were ethnicity (like being Latino) instead of "sexual orientation". Because he belongs to the group favored by God.

  3. I like porn actor Marco Rubi, better send him to Senate

  4. He seems to be saying that people would pretend to be gay in order to file lawsuits.
Lawsuits filed by a woman or racial minority can also be frivolous. It has to be determined by court and not him.

  5. Gays who are QUALIFIED, HONEST AND OUTPERFORM others STILL get fired for being gay and happens every single day. With this thought process, no one should be protected from discrimination except his own "people", of course. How would he feel if Hispanics could be fired just for being hispanic?! Two-faced bigot thinks "his" kind should be protected, gay or not. Let's fire his ass for just being hispanic.

  6. Jack-wad......and to think that we are placing these people in office. Something has to change in our political system.....Don't have the answer.........

  7. He is just anti-gay in the name of religion. They don't want religious freedom, which is already protected. Everyone who wishes can practice religion and no one is stopping that. It is even encouraged by government with tax exemptions from everything from purchases to donations to property tax relief. They just want the right to impose religion on everyone.

  8. The best way to stop these politicians is to take the profit out of being a politician and only people who wish to help the country would really be in public service. I hate rich, self-serving bigoted bastards.

  9. Rubio is a fool and a coward. His teabagger bonafides act as an anchor, sinking him and his political aspirations to higher office, and possibly making him vulnerable to a Democrat challenger.

  10. Word of advise to Rubio and Cruz:

Your own party wants to deport you. And your family. And anyone else who is Hispanic.

    Best advice:

    Don't sleep too lightly.

  11. And without ENDA a bigoted homophobic business owner can fire a gay employee for no other reason than for being gay. Rubio is a homophobic bigot.

  12. >"eople's qualifications, performance and honesty are the most important qualities by which they should be judged in the workplace"

Yes, and ENDA makes sure that that's the case.

The issue here is that Americans generally consider employers as feudal lords and employees as serfs. To be mistreated, abused and fired at will. Meanwhile, civilized countries realized that this is an unequal relationship and that employees need special protections.

  13. If Rubio were ever fired for being Latino, I'm sure there would be a lawsuit.

  14. How noble of him to say that people should be qualified based on their good work habits; tell that to the Catholic Schools, Boy Scouts, or any other company that doesn't have a non-discrimination policy for gays. He talks about frivolous lawsuits--how about frivolous firings in a company WITH a non-discrimination policy? Your boss will find any way they can to fire you if they don't like you being gay and HR will go along with it if they think they can get away with it. Their world is four feet in front of them/four feet behind them and four feet on either side and top and bottom. Bubble boy.

  15. Don’t want to be burdened ? Don’t discriminate !

  16. If Rubio honestly believes that "If you're a good worker, that's all that should matter" he should have no problem supporting ENDA, but he doesn't do either.

  17. It's been an unpleasant ride, but watching the tea party destroy itself was almost worth it. And all completely predictable.

  18. i'm shocked, no trans hating gays have weighed in yet. . . . . . everyone knows it's all our fault ENDA hasn't passed yet

  19. poor marco he and cruz spend more time trying deny they are minorities than anything . rubio should stick to gulping water and keep his mouth shut

  20. Does Marco Rubio have any convictions at all? He seems to be a leaf blowing in the wind of any teabag wind that blows from any direction.

  21. Rubio is just like Ted Cruz - both are showboating blowhards that think they're shoo-ins for the 2016 GOP nomination and don't even realize they're a total joke.

  22. Mr. Rubio commits himself to lying boldfaced. Mr. Rubio commits himself to NOT listening to reason. Again.

Mr. Rubio and his ilk run a blowhard brand of politics that maybe can ONLY be overcome by voting them out?

Mr. Rubio's line of thinking here naturally translates to believing Hispanics should have no basic protections from employment discrimination either.

Mr. Rybio makes me want to throw up in my mouth, honestly.

  23. I really hate it when people use the "special protections" argument. I'm tired of this Orwellian BS from the Right. Liberals didn't single gays out for special treatment; bigots did that. Bigots singled LGBT folk out for disapprobation and maltreatment; ENDA will help to end that special status.

Preventing special negative treatment is NOT "special protection." In fact, it's Rubio who wants to grant bigots special protection from the gay folks they want to discriminate against.

  24. This man is an absolute loser and has been his entire life! He was elected to office because he was able to attract favoritism among Hispanic voters who fell for his deceptions because he looked and talked like them. But in reality, he couldn't be closer to the antithesis of who they are. Of course, he was also able to bring along the rest of the IQless teabag minions with him. Enough is enough! It is time to get him OUT of office!

Conservative Cubans who back him want to hear this crap.
Foolish Liberals and Gays think that people like Rubio are stupid, rather than evil, and try to talk him out of it.
