Russian Homophobic Vigilantes Kidnap, Torture Gay South African Student: VIDEO

Earlier we updated you on anti-gay Russian activist Maxim Martsinkevich and his group "Occupy Pedophilia," which lures gay men with the promise of sex only to publicly shame them. Though Martsinkevich has fled Russia, fearing he will face charges of "extremism," he is not the only member of the neo-Nazi group that uses social media to hunt down and humiliate gay men. As The International Business Times reports, another video has surfaced showing other members of "Occupy Pedophilia" harassing and assaulting a 20-year old South African, David Smith, a student at Shukhov State Technological University:

In the 33-minute video, Smith has his hair shaved down the middle and painted green, insulted by a member of the Occupy Paedophilia gang, forced to kiss a watermelon and then has his head smashed with it.

The South African student is also forced to simulate oral sex on a beer bottle by the activists and made to perform the 'bent thumb' gesture - a mock version of the Facebook "like" sign which is an identification symbol among Occupy Paedophilia members.

According to the anti-LGBT group, Smith was later expelled from his university.

Sa2The video, which received thousands of "likes" on Vkontakte ("the Russian equivalent of Facebook"), has also provoked a legal response in Smith's home country:

Pretoria lawyers have written a letter to Russia authorities demanding an investigation into the latest homophobic incident.

"We demand an investigation as these perpetrators can easily be identified, as well as an explanation by the Russian authorities to the South African people," the letter stated, according to South African newspaper The Star.

"This thing of paedophilia, that comes from the thugs and that is the excuse they use to justify their actions. They're neo-Nazi skinheads, the paedophile thing is just a ruse. It's a thinly veiled smokescreen for homophobic attacks," said Pretoria lawyer Coenraad Kukkuk.

The letter also demands a travel warning to all South Africans of travel to the Russian Federation and the boycott of the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

You can watch the video posted by "Occupy Pedophilia" HERE but we warn you it is disturbing and graphic.

  1. But…but…Thomas Roberts is so cute and successful and normal. They must not have watched MISS UNIVERSE.

  2. Why would any sane black person venture into Russia? I am a light-skinned Puerto Rican and there are parts of the U.S. which I avoid like the plague.

  3. Russian culture is so perverse and brutal.

    Posted by: perry | Nov 11, 2013 12:29:13 PM

  4. Russia has become mean and brutal toward fellow mankind. Seems like Putin is permitting outlet of some rage on gays and foreigners, maybe as a means to redirect rage otherwise directed to this government.

  5. @PEDRO: my guess is that this student couldn't afford the education he wanted in SA and thought that Shukhov would be a good education at a price he could afford. Unfortunately, that was a terrible miscalculation.

Rather than blaming the victim, let's have some empathy.

And "Matthew Rettenmund", from one Phoenix to another, you're better than troll shots.

  6. Don't you think it's a bit unwise to make generalizations about "Russia" and "Russian culture" on the basis of one man's actions? Especially when his actions are against Russian law?

    Posted by: Eugene | Nov 11, 2013 12:59:16 PM

  7. @ Eugene.

Not really. Even Russian people will tell you how meanspirited life is there.

  8. Sick. And I'm disappointed that this site would include photos of this disgusting act.

  9. Eugene : What actions? in Russia being gay is perfectly legal, what is not allowed is the supposed gay propaganda.

And i agree with SA authorities, it's pretty obvious that the Pedophilia accusations are just a excuse to justifie the agressions

  10. @perry
Life has different aspects, and only some of them are brutal, so it's wrong to reduce life in Russia to the brutal aspects. And not everyone is a brute. Homophobic violence happens in many countries, including the US. Would you call American culture brutal and perverse because of one homophobe's actions?

I was talking about Martsinkevich, who had to flee Russia. So it's unwise to use his actions as an example of how Russia really is.

  11. Matthw Retenmund, exactly what does this have to do with Thomas Roberts? Your comment is idiotic.

    Posted by: db | Nov 11, 2013 1:40:46 PM

  12. jjose712, these people wouldn't be doing what they are doing in such a public matter if they didn't think they could get away with it. The laws and public attitude in Russia are exactly what give them that idea. And really, you think it's "perfectly legal" to be gay when you can't say anything about it? If you were heterosexual and yet couldn't acknowledge that you were married to a woman do you think that would be "perfectly legal"? Stop making excuses and just admit that these laws are doing exactly what Russians want them to--terrify gay people into silence, but please spare us the b.s.

  13. With the same leniency some people are having towards these acts against gay people, the Kristallnacht would also have been deemed a mere act of thugs that were not supported by the government. Reality is that if the government had the minimal interest in prosecuting the perpetrators for real, banning the publication and promotion and encouragement in the Russian media –they don’t have qualms forbidding “gay propaganda” though-, preventing it, etcetera, these things wouldn’t happen. I repeat: gays are just the scapegoat, a way to distract their people of other problems, they traditionally released social pressure by targeting some defenseless group, the word pogrom has a deserving Russian origin.

  14. Anyone else notice the hard-on at 11:00 minutes. More to this story than the headline would lead you to believe...a little too willing to be considered "torture". If you were kidnapped and tortured by strangers, fight or flight would kick tears, no pleading?! Just saying, I wouldn't be surprised if part 2 of this video is him in the middle of a circle dealing bjs...

    Posted by: reallythough | Nov 11, 2013 3:03:53 PM

  15. I see the video has been taken down and the victim's face blurred.

  16. db: Well in the USA was ilegal being gay in some states not so far ago, that's not Russia's case. In theory there's nothing ilegal about being gay, you can't be arrested for being gay or for having gay sex.
That is ilegal in a lot of countries, not in Rusia.
Of course, Rusia's climate right now is heavily antigay, and it would be a lot worse without the international backlash.
When your country is not doing well, you need distractions to the people, in other countries are inmigrants, and you don't need to go far, the rising of far right partys is high in europe, in fact very few european countries (Portugal or Spain) don't have any far right party.
In Rusia's case, the orthodox church has a lot to say in all this.
So yes, gays (and not only gays) are suffering the consecuences.

  17. reallythough: I think you are the one with a hard on. You are really disgusting

    Posted by: jjose712 | Nov 11, 2013 3:13:58 PM

  18. As disgusting as this is, and though I have tremendous sympathy for the victim, what I am glad to hear about is that his country is supporting him and this is turning into an international incident. The more exposure and pressure there is on the Russian government to protect ALL its citizens, including the GLBT ones, the better.

    Posted by: Graphicjack | Nov 11, 2013 3:20:45 PM

  19. @REALLYTHOUGH, you're one disgusting creep aren't you? Is it your fantasy you are projecting on this incident?

  20. I keep telling you people - BOYCOTT the Sochi Olympics but oh no, how can we do that to our fine American athletes? Well, here's video proof of why we can expect our athletes to refuse to go and for you to refuse to watch or support those sponsors who are paying Russia billions of dollars.

Just like Thomas Roberts who claimed repeatedly that his presence would help end the discriminatory laws, he did NOTHING but make a pile of Trump money. The man is a sell-out and the lowest kind of American gay weasel. You are cutting your own throats as well as the throats of many gay Russians if you don't boycott the Olympics.

  24. As much as I hate these russian bigots and wish them a slow and painful death from cancer, I'm finding it difficult to have any sympathy for their "victims" if they are indeed adult males seeking 15 year olds online to have sex with.

I hate Bigots and pedophiles/pederasts with equal passion.

    Posted by: Edmund | Nov 11, 2013 11:08:40 PM

  25. @Edmund: do we have any evidence that their victims were in fact responding to ads from alleged underaged boys, or is that something the homophobes just made up as an excuse after the fact?
