Russian Promoter Fined For 'Harming Children' By Organizing Lady Gaga Concert

Lady Gaga

The heinous Russian anti-gay "propaganda" laws have found a victim in Planet Plus, a St. Petersburg promoter who organized Lady Gaga's concert last year. Even though it was Gaga herself who broke the law by promoting equality and respect for all during her show, a Russian court found Planet Plus in violation of a law that “protects children from information that is harmful to their health and/or development,” a reinstatement of a verdict that had actually been previously overturned.

A fine was levied of 20,000 rubles, or approximately $614. The amount is pretty paltry for American incomes, but the average Russian salary is roughly 23,600 rubles, or $790. So in American terms, the fine is comparable to about $44,000 for a "crime" that Planet Plus was in no way involved in.

The reason Planet Plus was fined in the first place was because a parent who was a member of the conservative group The Union of Russian Citizens complained after taking her 13-year-old daughter to see the show in what is perhaps the most obvious case this year of someone trying to be offended.

  1. There should be no complaints from American gays and affiliated groups. After all, we refuse to boycott the Sochi Olympics and the World Games and instead, insist the mere presence of stifled American gay Olympians and their supporters do more good than denying Russia billions in American sponsor and tourist dollars. I see it working now, don't you?

  2. Gaga should send him 10 times the penalty.

  3. Hey. Just a heads up. That is an avg monthly of 600. Not annual

  4. Will Towleroad writers please get their heads out of their butts about all things outside the US? Do you really think the average russian makes $2 a day? Obviously that's a monthly number, and there are all sorts of other adjustments you'd need to make to compare incomes across countries. It's apparent you have absolutely no idea what living standards are like outside the US. Let me assure you they're a lot better than you think.

  5. If you want real numbers, Wikipedia reports PPP adjusted average income of the US around $30,000 vs $9400 in Russia, although I'm not sure why you're even comparing a corporate fine to individual incomes rather than, say, the income the organiser made on the concert.

  6. Well, we failed to organize a boycott of Sochi. We failed ourselves. Our allies failed us. All those people who say they are on our side failed us.

Lady Gaga, herself, has been incredibly quiet lately on gay rights, and hardly stood up for Russia's gays except for one brief statement months ago. Rumor has it that her label, Interscope, has supposedly told her to cut out her public display of gay advocacy, and she has allegedly agreed to it. I don't know if this is true but that is the rumor.

What right do we have to complain about a promoter being fined in Russia if we can't even get our advocates - including fake ones like Lady Gaga - to support us?

  7. He deserves everything he gets for supporting that greaseball f@g lover. Supporting fake c*nts like her instead of embracing more respectable conservative acts is why you liberal effeminates deserve all the legal and physical bashings you get. Accept your minority status and shut the hell up.

  9. Christian Walters needs a little heads-up on Lady Gaga. Here's the clue, Christian: Lady Gaga is simply interested in making money. Her gay advocacy comes across as fake. Her bisexuality comes across as fake. She's in the business to make money, pure and simple.

Why else do you think she was in Russia in the first place? It's not as if Russia suddenly became homophobic. Russia has been homophobic for a long time and, yet, Lady Gaga still went there to make money through her concert.

With lady Gaga, the only thing that really matters is money.

  10. The middle JimBryant above - who advocates violence - is an impostor who has used my name to tarnish me.

Must be a Lady Gaga fan who doesn't like his idol being exposed for what she is.

  11. JimBryant/endorado (you two are the same person, apparently): why do you even come here? Are you even a member of the LGBT community?

    Posted by: Tyler | Nov 17, 2013 4:22:15 PM

  12. Tyler,

Yes, I've had a number of enjoyable relationships with men. I fight for gay rights. I'm an activist. I've attended gay rights protests. I don't just sit on my backside.

The thing I don't like about these female pop singers - and it's not just Lady Gaga - is that they have been manufactured by their labels. They pretend to be gay-friendly when what they are really doing is using us as a cover to appeal to the straight guy fantasy for lesbianism and boobs.

There is a pattern of this right throughout the industry right now.

Meanwhile, where are the genuinely gay and bisexual men in the music industry? They are relegated to no-man's land while these attention whores get all the sales and publicity.

Time to wake up, buddy. We're being lied to.

  13. Jimbryant, you're a confirmed alias of our resident troll. The only person lying is you. In fact, it's ALL you do. So, Rick, don't even start complaining about people lying.

  14. @jimbryant

What you need to remember is that Russia isn't monolithic. Not everyone is homophobic - and people going to Lady Gaga's shows are much less likely to be homophobic than other Russians. That's why it's ridiculous to criticize Lady Gaga for going to Russia.

  15. Lady Gaga deserves the criticism.

She went to Russia at a time when Pussy Riot was being hounded and detained. And yet she still went there with the knowledge that Putin was preparing crackdowns on human rights in general, not just gay rights.

  16. the russians are crazy.

  17. @jimbryant

Did she go to Russia to sing for Putin? Or for her fans?

    Posted by: Eugene | Nov 17, 2013 6:27:17 PM

  18. I don't actually have any Gaga stuff myself, but she is not another Katy Perry/Kei$ha etc. soulless empty money making formula pop machine. She's an Italian girl from Queens who did want to be the next Madonna, and is also a pretty good musician and singer and does actually have a political consciousness and communicates progressive and pro-gay messages along the way, and means it.

    Posted by: emjayay | Nov 18, 2013 1:45:30 AM

  19. I do agree Jim but Lady G is better then Madonna in actually doing stuff.

Still, gays love mean women...don't ask me why. Interesting that Andy put only the quotes about Tyler that he wanted re the word f*g but ignored that he also gets the same reaction re n*gga. With the Lady Gaga interview he completely ignored to mention that she denied being a gay rights advocate.

In fact only Queerty reported it.

Make that what you will. Whatever. That's life and everyone has an agenda.
