Screen Shot 2013-12-16 at 12.17.47 PM

After a successful landing on Saturday, China became the third country, after the U.S. and the former Soviet Union, to land an unmanned spacecraft on the moon. It was the first "soft landing" on the moon since 1976.

Then, early Sunday morning, Beijing Aerospace Flight Control Center commanded the lander's 'Jade Rabbit' rover to roll onto the lunar surface to begin its mission conducting geological surveys.

Check out awesome footage of both events, AFTER THE JUMP...

  3. And as USA destroys its space program, teaches creationism in schools, guts public education, and still claims to be "the greatest country in the world", China is steadily mapping out its new territories.

  7. Newday:
US still has space program. Just the priority has shifted away from manned space program. The argument in the community is whether it is cheaper to send space vehicles to outer space without human beings on board.
Remarkable images were obtained by the Hubble telescope. They also had Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) which measured the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. These were fundamental experimental studies on the Universe.
They have already led to many new discoveries. No need to be too pessimistic.
