Ryan Murphy, most famous for television series like American Horror StoryGlee, and Nip/Tuck, is now taking on Larry Kramer's 1985 play The Normal Heart. Murphy's directorial adaptation of the play, a semi-autobiographical work which chronicles the founding of the Gay Men's Health Crisis during the peak of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, will appear on HBO this spring. The film stars Mark Ruffalo, Julia Roberts, Jim Parsons (who appeared in the recent Broadway revival of the play), Matt Bomer, and Taylor Kitsch. Now, the first official image from the film has been released (above).

Entertainment Weekly reports:

“It’s a movie about AIDS, but it’s also really a civil rights movie,” says Murphy, who worked with Kramer on the script for three years. “I think it’s more timely than ever before. It’s really about the quest to be seen, not as a gay person or a straight person but just a person…. It’s an activist movie that also has a really great love story in it.” Adds the director, “Of everything I’ve done in my career, I think it is the biggest labor of love.”

Many will be waiting with bated breath to see how Murphy's film adaptation holds up against the fiery rage of the staged original. Are you looking forward to The Normal Heart?

  2. Hollywood makes movies about gays if we are : about to die , have aids, are drag queens or are hairdressers. Plus Liberace. True story. You can't deny I'm right.

  4. Grifter,

We are being stereotyped by liberal effeminate gays.

  5. The Normal Heart is an amazing play. I can't believe it took this long to make a film version. And even that isn't going to be released theatrically (in the US anyway) but on HBO. That alone says a lot about how far we still have to go.

  10. Effeminate gay men in Hollywood tend to portray male homosexuality as an effeminate paradigm because they don't want to offend women. Women find masculine homosexuality quite threatening.

  11. ASAMB: I get frustrated by effeminate portrayals, too, but your posts show you to be idiot. It's sounds like you're trying desperately to provoke, for provocation's sake, like a 6-year-old does. For someone advocating for portrayals of more masculine gay men, you're a terrible, irrational advocate.

  12. Go to hell Rick aka Asamb. Nobody gives a cr@p about you or your baggage.

As for the this movie, I won't watch it. Larry Kramer is a self-righteous gas bag. I can't understand how anyone could confuse his political rants with playwriting. Here's a guy who calls pretty much everyone he disagrees with a nazi or a murderer. But the truth is that he caught the virus and he spread it. And he tries to deal with that by attacking hardworking people at the CDC. Shame on him.

  13. Effeminate gay men are the enemy of male homosexuality.

  14. Mark Ruffalo is the best.

    Thanks.

  16. Over this crap. Gay men are more than Lifetime movie of the week "im about to die" drama.

seriously ffs, get with the 21st century.

  22. Hollywood wants us to be effeminate and tragic. It wants us to utter Gloria Swanson lines as we waste away in a golden hue.

Never trust Hollywood. It's a homophobic cabal of liberals.

  23. As to what we can do to stop movies like The Normal Heart being made, here's a tip: don't watch it.

Tell your friends not to watch it. Take your angst out on anyone who supports movies like this. Do it publicly and loudly. Don't shirk. Don't hesitate to criticize women.

    Posted by: ASamb | Dec 15, 2013 4:54:33 AM

  24. @ASAMB and the silly friends in your head: Aren't you a bit old to be so juvenile? Have some self-respect, stop acting like a toddler.

Seeing "The Normal Heart" now is very different from seeing it in a theater when it was new, and the wounds were raw. Many viewers will have had little or no direct relationship to that era--it's important history as well as theater. Ryan Murphy's presence on the project gives me pause, but I'm glad it's finally being made with Larry's collaboration. Being on HBO instead of having a theatrical release isn't a badge of dishonor these days--HBO is a better home for this. It will be seen there.

  25. With Ryan Murphy directing this outstanding cast the HBO movie The Normal Heart should be amazing. The fact that Rick (ASAMB, GRI) the irrational bigoted hater of "effeminate" gay men and the often hysterical and sometimes vile Little Kiwi are already hating on it are also good indicators that the movie should be awesome.
