Madonna Joins HRC Campaign Against Russia

Madonna

Madonna sent an email out this morning drumming up support for the Human Rights Campaign's 'Love Conquers Hate' campaign.

Wrote Madge in the mail:

"Love conquers hate." It's an iconic message that the Human Rights Campaign's members and supporters have spread to millions around the United States.

But right now in Russia, LGBT people and our allies who support basic fairness and dignity face a different reality. They are being targeted by hateful new laws that outlaw support for LGBT equality. Even with the 2014 Sochi Olympics just a few months away, fair-minded Russians are facing fines, harassment, and violence at the hands of thugs.

At this dangerous moment in Russian history, we as advocates have a responsibility to speak up and take our hopeful message global. That's why I'm joining HRC's Love Conquers Hate campaign, in hopes that more and more fair-minded people around the world will stand up and fight against the Russian government's campaign of hate.

Madonna wore the HRC shirt in a photograph she posted last month on Instagram.

  1. Nice to see HRC still knows how to cash in....

  2. Love her or hate her (and I know many do both), she's a huge international name. Her wearing that shirt and signing the letter will get infinitely more global attention than stars in a different stratosphere. So maybe she did it for attention. Maybe she did it to deflect criticism. Maybe she did it because getting pilloried before opened her eyes. Who knows? Who cares? Her lending her name to this will help tremendously, so I'll accept it and move on in my effort to help my Russian brothers and sisters in their fight against oppression.

  3. Visibility is always important but Madonna and HRC t-shirts?! Shirley we can do better than this!

  4. This 'Love Conquers Hate' campaign confuses me.

    What are the specific aims?

Is it HRC policy to actively encourage US companies to invest in Russia.

Does it actively encourage a boycott of all Russian goods and services.

Or is it just a PR campaign for the west with no practical bemefits for the Russian gay community?

  5. It's always good to have support from anyone when your own country is attempting to turn citizens against you. In modern society, we know all too well that it can work, to devastating results.

Having a voice such as Madonna to defend you gives hope when your country would provide none. Her fame is worldwide and she is definitely not hurting anything voicing her support.

  6. To Hey Darlin'

You are absolutely right! Madonna's support for gay rights does have an impact around the world and especially with her fans, in Russia and everywhere else.

  7. Why would anybody want support from an AIDS infested has-been who belongs in a nursing home?

  8. There is something seriously wrong with a gay current affairs website when the posters cannot find a kind word to say about one of our most vocal allies of the last thirty years, and a little monster can write the following without much ado:

"Why would anyone want support from an AIDS-infested has-been who belongs in a nursing home?"

The internet is either truly ruining our culture or it has exposed humanity for its biggest and most unforgivable flaw. Either way, Artpop Monster is absolutely disgusting and there should be some sort of consequence for this type of nonsensical adolescent bile.

  9. @ALEX I'd have to agree with at least one point. I'm glad to see Madonna get involved in any capacity... her name alone can bring a ton of extra visibility to the cause, even if she isn't stumping for it all over the place.

  10. @artpop monster's comment is a glaring example of why Towleroad should go to a comment system that is not anonymous (Disqus, FB or the like). Does anyone moderate the comments?

  11. I find it sad that some Gaga fans ignore her own anti-bullying messaging by being some of the most disturbed, hateful, ugly posters on online comment threads. It turns off a lot of potential fans and I am sure it's coloured, in part, my overall apathy toward "la monstre mère".

As for Madge, her passion for her SecretProject Revolution is awesome. This post about her support of the Love Conquers Hate campaign is certainly appreciated, even if I find HRC particularly useless. Over the last years, she focused more on her family, AIDS, poverty and education in Africa, and I don't begrudge that in the least, but it's nice to have her back in the saddle fighting for us again. Thanks, Madonna.
