Jason Collins to Sit in Michelle Obama's Box for 'State of the Union' Address

NBA player Jason Collins will sit in First Lady Michelle Obama's box at the State of the Union address on Tuesday night, according to the White House.

Sportsillustrated_collinsWrites the White House in its announcement:

While at Stanford, Jason Collins was selected as an All American, named the NCAA’s “Big Man of the Year,” and earned an appearance in the Final Four. After graduating in 2001, Collins was drafted into the NBA and has since played for six teams including the Celtics, whose then coach Doc Rivers said of Collins: “He’s the best. He literally is one of the best guys I’ve ever had in the locker room, player or coach.” In his 12 years in the league, Collins’ teams earned 9 trips to the playoffs including 2 NBA Finals appearances. In April 2013, Collins became the first male player in major American team sports to come out openly as gay. The President expressed his gratitude to Collins for his courageous announcement through an article Collins penned himself. The President said he “couldn’t be prouder” of Collins, recognizing this as a point of progress for the LGBT community, and one more step in America’s goal to treat everyone fairly and with respect. Collins is 35 and lives in Los Angeles, California.

Dr. Jill Biden, and Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to the President will join them.

Also guests of the First Lady are Carlos Arredondo and Jeff Bauman (Boston, MA) ,Survivors of the Boston Marathon Bombing; Gary Bird, (Moore, OK) Fire Chief; Joey Hudy (Anthem, AZ), “Maker” and Intel Intern; and Kathy Hollowell-Makle, (Washington, DC), 2013 DCPS Teacher of the Year.

  1. Yet more empty symbolism from Obama designed to win our votes. ....

  2. Yet more trolling from Jason.

  3. An indication that the gay vote has become important. And a reminder that the Republicans are late to the game (and scrambling to make up the distance).

    It's nice to be courted.

  4. Very cool. The Obamas always hit the perfect stride with things like this. Jason Collins is a role model for people of all backgrounds, but most importantly young gay kids who might want to participate in a sports but feel like they don't "fit". I hope more collegiate and professional athletes follow Jason's lead.

  5. LOL, "sit in Michelle Obama's box."

  6. His career is basically over at this point. Why not some brave LGBT high school athlete?

  7. Just to clarify to anyone who didn't understand Crispy's comment: He was definitely referring to the comment before his, which was written by someone who used to be "Jason" and now spams this comment section under numerous screen names, including "Sam." He wasn't referring to Jason Collins from the news story.

  8. Starting to feel genuine shame at the NBA for no team being willing to take Collins on. I really expected there to be a team with a need who would see his value. He is a smart, dedicated, experienced PROFESSIONAL in a league of tattooed, baby-daddy punks.

If anyone other than anti-gay bigot Mark Jackson was coaching Golden State, Collins would be on the team in San Francisco.

Nice words from Doc Rivers, but you mean to tell me that a young team with minimal playoff experience like the Clippers can't use the steadying voice of 12-year vet like Collins? In Los Angeles no less?

And Mike D'Antoni with the Lakers? The Los Angeles phukkin' Lakers can't have an out gay player on their team? More like Mike D'Amnedphony.

Mark Cuban in Dallas even? Mavericks have been starting a guy (DaJuan Blair) who's 6'5" at center, because the guy who's supposed to be starting can't wake up in time to show up for practice. Mavericks got literally a.$.$.-raped in Cleveland the other night because they couldn't get a defensive rebound. Almost lost the game because of it. And they have no use for a classy veteran big man like Collins? And they let some 29-year old second year player sit at the end of the bench because he served in the military?

Knicks don't surprise me--owner Dolan is too stupid.

Nets have a Russian owner--enough said.

  9. Barack obama will never be on a ballot again, more than likely, and FLOTUS has not interest in running for office.

    This is not about votes.

This is about "kiss my ENTIRE black ass" and I love it.

  12. I think SAM's comment was meant to be sarcasm, since a lot of people thought that Obama's repeal of DADT was a ploy for our votes, and Obama's still pulling for us even though he won't benefit from our votes now.
