Walt Disney World Cuts Ties with Boy Scouts Until They Are Fully Inclusive

You may recall that back in April of 2013, the Boy Scouts of America began allowing gay kids under the age of 18 to participate in scouting, but maintained that openly gay adults still could not serve as scout leaders. Walt_disney_world

This discriminatory policy has led Walt Disney World to discontinue funding the BSA through their annual “Ears to You” grant program until the policy changes:

In an e-mail to local members, Central Florida Council Board President Robert Utsey wrote: “We recognize that many Scout Units have received financial support over the last several years from this grant opportunity and are sad to see it go. The National BSA Council has reached out to [Walt Disney World] to try to resolve the situation, however, according to WDW, their views do not currently align with the BSA and they are choosing to discontinue this level of support.”

Since Scouts for Equality’s inception in 2012, seven major corporate sponsors of the Boy Scouts of America have ended their partnerships with the organization. These sponsors include Lockheed Martin, Caterpillar, Major League Soccer, Merck, Intel, UPS and now Walt Disney World.

Zach Wahls, the co-founder of Eagle Scout and Scouts for Equality — who is himself a straight Eagle Scout with two lesbian parents — said, “We’re never happy to see Scouting suffer as a result of the BSA’s anti-gay policy, but Disney made the right decision to withhold support until Scouting is fully inclusive.”

  4. Really, at this point BSA, the only people you are hurting with your continued bigotry is your own organization.

I hope the BSA can figure that simple fact out before the entire organization simply tanks, but I won't hold my breath, bigotry and intelligence do not seem to occur simultaneously.

  5. And the fact that the BSA continues to discriminate against atheists and others who are not religious?

  7. Look, some things you have to let be what they are - discrimination is one thing, but expecting was is basically a faith based organization - and I am an Eagle - and expecting it to throw everything out is unrealistic. They can coexist.

  13. Whatever happened to the conservative, anti-gay alternative to the BSA that was announced with such fanfare right after the Scouts made the decision to admit gays? I'm sure it didn't gain much traction, but there were a lot of evangelical churches behind it. Would be interesting to know if they succeeded.

  14. Tigernan: The boy scouts are not a faith based organization. Several churches, the Mormans and Catholics in particular, decided that the scouting would be perfect for their youth programs. But that is on them not scouting. I was a scout in the late 60's and 70's. It wasn't faith based. It was packs formed around schools. Churches had nothing to do with it other than sometimes providing meeting places.
Coexisting means just that both sides live in harmony. Telling one side you cannot participate is not coexistence. Its discrimination.
