American Anti-gay Group Cancels Family Conference in Russia over Crimea Tension

KremlinThe World Congress of Families, a virulently anti-gay umbrella organization that includes the American Family Association, Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, and NOM, has announced that it will be suspending its upcoming family summit in Moscow due to travel and logistical concerns related to “the situation in the Ukraine and Crimea.”

Right Wing Watch reports that the Brian Brown and Scott Lively-approved summit came under increased scrutiny after Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine earlier this month.

WCF’s press release, however, makes it clear that the group still stands behind Russian president Vladimir Putin’s crackdown on LGBT people.

Wcf logoThe foregoing is not meant to reflect negatively on the Russian people, churches or individuals who have taken a leadership role in the fight to preserve life, marriage, and the natural family at home and as part of the international pro-family movement.

We are proud of the accomplishments of our Russian Partners, and applaud the moves of the Russian people, through their elected representatives, to protect life, the family and the innocence of children. At a time when Western governments are moving backward to a pagan worldview, Russia has taken a leadership role to advance the natural family.

Complicating things further for WCF is the fact that Yelena Mizulina, the architect of Russia’s gay propaganda ban and one of the primary organizers of the summit, was among those sanctioned by President Obama for interfering with Ukrainian sovereignty.

  1. They have to act fast before it is too late. US may restrict US citizens travel to Russia when the crisis escalates. It is not a bad idea for them to emigrate and apply for asylum . Just invent some excuse like "loss of religious freedom". They can also convert to the Orthodox faith in order to sell their "talents" again in the new land.

  5. Yo, Family Association;
    has no one ever told you that when you sup with the Devil you should use a long spoon.

    You'd think that would be one of the first lessons to be learned in your Bible 101.

  6. It is a sad day when Americans need to go a former enemy and Communist country to share their ideology. And they call Barack Obama a Communist? Who are the Communists now?

    The innocence of children? How many children are being disowned by their families, locked in prison, beaten, and possibly murdered in Russia because the government there turns a blind eye to perpetrators of human rights negligence? These groups have blood on their hands.

  10. We've all seen the videos of how children are treated in Russia being beaten, doused in urine and humiliated for the pleasure of those who are as like minded as the organizations plotting their pilgrimage to their motherland. Oh no, It's not their motherland huh. Then it seems very odd to align yourself with a foreign entity unless there's something to gain from the merger.

    They used to call the House Un-American Activities Committee on such organizations.

  11. "We are proud of the accomplishments of our Russian Partners, and applaud the moves of the Russian people, through their elected representatives, to protect life, the family and the innocence of children." So disgusting. They're proud of the systematic oppression of gays; they're proud of the pogroms, and the police and government standing back and laughing or participating...

    Have any of you read the GQ article about being gay in Russia? Russian anti-gays don't care about children, they don't just metaphorically use children as weapons, they LITERALLY DO! One vigilante group knew of a kiss-in protest, so they got all their 8-13 year old brothers, cousins, whatever, and got the CHILDREN to attack the kiss-in members because they KNEW gays would be too moral to fight back against the CHILDREN they deployed against them. So the anti-gay adults stood there and laughed while their children swarmed the kiss-in group kicking and hitting. Disgusting. Russians are disgusting.
