At Least Four Michigan Counties to Issue Marriage Licenses to Gay Couples Today

Last night, Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum (above left) told her Twitter followers they would need to wait until Monday before she would start issuing marriage licenses, but at about 6:33 am this morning she tweeted that she was going to be opening today at 8 am.

Write Byrum:

"Ingham County residents wishing to marry:  The Clerk's Mason Office WILL BE OPEN at 8am TODAY! People have waited long enough.  I was sick with myself with the idea of waiting until Monday. You must apply in the county in which you or your partner reside. At least one of the individuals must be a resident of the county in which a couple applies."

The Muskegon County Clerk, Oakland County  and the Washtenaw County (Ann Arbor) Clerk will issue licenses on Saturday as well. See red shaded counties on map.

This is such great news to see in Michigan.

What baffles me is why the state didn’t ask for a stay as part of their defence (or at least why the decision didn’t address a stay at all). Something like “if our defence fails, we ask the court to stay the decision pending the appeal we intend to file” Isn’t that normal?

Our opposition often seems to be so convinced they’ll win, they’re completely unprepared to deal with actually going though the legal system. Remember Mr. “I don’t know … We don’t need evidence” Cooper from the Prop 8 case? It’s strange.

In this case, if the AG is going directly to the circuit court, then it’s likely (just as in Utah) that the court will send them back to Friedman to ask for the stay properly (unless they already did that and the judge ignored it).

Michigan: The state where women have to buy special abortion insurance in case they are raped.

I look forward to Republicans who control the state to sputter along in their hateful attempt to defend the indefensible.

I hope more couples get married before the Sixth Circuit (or the Supreme Court) issues a stay — like happened in Utah. Interestingly, Judge Friedman has a military background and was appointed by Reagan!

The Sixth Circuit or the Supreme Court has absolutely no business issuing stays to equality.

    The time is now.

If stays are issued then I believe that resistance (violent if necessary) is justifiable.

The US needs to become a democracy.
