Bryan Fischer Says Modern Family Is 'Poison'

And not just "poison," but also "harmful" and "lethal."

The head of the American Family Association was being interviewed by conservative talk radio host Kevin Miller last week when he made the comments.

While discussing Modern Family, they pointed out that the show portrays the gay couple in a positive light and the heterosexual couples in a less flattering light - implying that the show is actually anti-heterosexual.

A transcript of their conversation is below, courtsey of Right Wing Watch:

TSM_KevinMillerMiller: One of the most popular shows on television, "Modern Family," and you have the guy from "Married With Children" who is married to a young, attractive Latina woman with a kid from another marriage. You've got the heterosexual couple with the stereotypical family; they're the most challenged or, dare we say, the most screwed-up. And then we have the same-sex male family where we have a man and man in a loving, committed relationship that just doesn't have any, any problems. And apparently the promotion on ABC has allowed this show to be very popular and it does impact people and you have good Christians who turn the other cheek, who don't want to be labeled as intolerant and yet, they don't want these values on the airwaves.

6a00d8341c730253ef017eea2df434970dFischer: What's illustrated there is way that the media influences the way that people think about life. The portrait there that's being presented is designed to make you think that same-sex households are wonderful, they're loving, this is paradise, this is the optimum nurturing environment for children; to make you think that heterosexual marriage is bondage, it's dreary, it's gloomy, and we know that the social research indicates exactly the opposite.

You know, that's the danger. It's just like getting a little bit of poison over a long period of time, eventually getting enough accumulation in there where it can be kind of lethal to the organism. And I think that's what you're seeing with a lot of this programming. It has to do with kind of the basic view of morality and marriage and life and family that people have. It's very corrosive; people are just watching TV to be entertained, not realizing that their view of life is being twisted in a way that's very harmful to them and harmful to our culture.

  1. I agree, it's a pretty lousy show. Just stop watching it. Jeez!

  3. Well that snake should know a thing or two about poison, I'll give him that.

  4. Cam and Mitch argue and fight and disagree as a couple all the time. Just as much as all the other families on the show. It's proof that they don't watch it, they just demonize it because it's gay.

  5. I think he was already "poisoned" by the Bible.

  6. It's a great show. And I'm not sure why Phil and Claire are supposed to be screwed up. They're great. Their family is wonderful.

Everyone on that show is a stereotype of some sort. It's a comedy.

  8. Keep on talking Bryan Feltcher, you are doing more for the advancement of gay rights than you will ever be smart enough to realize!

  9. And their television sets only receive one channel? Change the F**ker to ETWN, for Christ's sake. He'll be pleased, right?

  10. If these "good Christians" turn the other cheek and don't watch the show anyway why do these numbnuts have their panties all twisted?

  11. Another lying grifter for jeebus!

  12. It's called "situation comedy" because everyone is fodder for a joke. The only think Modern Family does is prove that ALL families, whether they're gay, straight, multi-racial, or otherwise, have disfunction, misunderstandings, etc - but are always united by LOVE. That's something Fischer and his hateful ilk will NEVER understand.

  13. I guess they would be shocked to find that many gays believe that Modern Family is pure crap, and does NOT portray a positive image of a gay couple. At all.

  14. "to make you think this is the optimum nurturing environment for children; to make you think that heterosexual marriage is bondage, it's dreary, it's gloomy, and we know that the social research indicates exactly the opposite."

This is an egregious lie; studies over the past two decades have conclusively shown that gay and straight families have no significant differences. Of course, no one in the media ever brings conservatives to task for these blatant falsehoods.

  15. As we all know by now Fischer is a m'shugenah.

  16. Seconding Ryan. They clearly don't watch the show, they make it sound like Claire and Phil are on the verge of divorce while Cam and Mitchell have some flawless life.

  17. "The food was terrible, and such small portions"

How is it that you watch the show you supposedly hate enough to draw these conclusions?

  18. He is more obsessed with gay sex than any gay man I've ever know, including myself. How very telling. He isn't fooling me one bit. He may as well get it tattooed on his forehead.

  19. Does anyone else think Kevin Miller looks like the lovechild/evil spawn of Cam and Mitchell?

  20. Propos to Bryan Fisher for the poison comment, although I much prefer A.E Houseman's take on gradual does of poison in his poem "Terrence, this is stupid stuff" from A Shropshire Lad:

  22. The beauty of television and remote controls is that if you don't like a show, change the channel! It's not rocket science! Obviously enough Americans do like the show enough for it to stay on the air. This is not a difficult concept to grasp. Nobody is holding a gun to the heads of the faithful coercing them to watch it..

  23. I agree with several commenters above: In the tradition of sitcoms, every single character has serious flaws and foibles, and all the couples love each other, love their children, love their inlaws, and are essentially good people.

What these guys don't like is the equal portrayal of everyone which they completely distort in a fun house mirror in their minds, and the quality and popularity of the show.

I continue to think that stuff in pop culture like Modern Family and Will and Grace and Rosanne and Brokeback Mountain and Macklemore and Lady Gaga etc. are as important as political action starting with the Mattachine Society onwards and opinion pieces and all the other parts of moving the, um, Gay Agenda forward over the years.

  24. As everyone is pointing out, they clearly don't watch the show. Not one family on that show is more screwed up than the other.

And it would be nice when the day comes when the gay couple doesn't feature one, if not both, of the guys as complete flaming. We need more shows like Happy Endings or How I Met Your Mother that don't hide the gay guy behind some big flame.

  25. 'poison' and 'lethal'??
And they say that we gays are prone to hyperbole?! sheesh
